Lezo offers several distinct points of interest to help you plan your trip: Trapujale, the main character of Carnival; the towers on Jaizkibel; and the historic heritage trail to the Barracones. Routes through the cultural landscape and a mountain route add specific landscape-related highlights to these themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Lezo, you can plan your stay around whether you are mainly interested in Carnival, historical heritage or routes through the landscape.

Trapujale and the Carnival of Lezo

Trapujale is the main character of the Carnival of Lezo. The figure is therefore a clear local point of reference if you would like to include Carnival as a cultural theme in your travel plans. This focus differs from the historical themes on Jaizkibel: here, a Carnival character takes centre stage, while there, the focus is on the history of structures and heritage sites.

Towers and historical heritage on Jaizkibel

The towers on Jaizkibel were built during the Third Carlist War, from 1872 to 1876. Three of the five surviving towers on Jaizkibel are located in Lezo and are listed as a monument complex (Conjunto Monumental). The construction period places the towers within a specific historical era; their classification as a complex draws attention to several structures rather than a single tower.

Another historical point of interest is Barracones de Jaizkibel. On the slopes of Jaizkibel, near the centre of Lezo, the only surviving one of the 13 forced-labour camps in the Oarsoaldea and Bajo Bidasoa area has been preserved. The historical themes on Jaizkibel are therefore distinct: the towers are listed as a complex, while Barracones de Jaizkibel commemorates the forced-labour camps.

The historic heritage trail

The historic heritage trail to Barracones de Jaizkibel starts at Plaza de Santo Cristo. The route can be walked and leads to the Sorotxo and Iparragirre areas. The round trip takes approximately one hour and is of low-to-moderate difficulty. The approximate duration is for the round trip, giving you a time estimate to help with planning.

Cultural landscape and routes

One route passes through Altamira and crosses a typical Atlantic cultural landscape. Notable farmhouses in this area include Darietazarra and Miura. As well as heritage sites, the rural cultural landscape is therefore another distinct point of interest to consider when planning your trip. An 11 km mountain route runs along the southern side of Jaizkibel. The Plataiturri spring is also highlighted along one of the routes.

The different route details can help you choose: an approximate round-trip duration is given for the historic heritage trail, while the mountain route is 11 km long.
