If you’re looking for a hotel in Muskiz, its architectural history and coastal paths may shape your choice of destination. San Julián de Muskiz offers a cultural focus centered on the parish church and its surroundings. Paths and activities at La Arena beach add a maritime dimension to this perspective. You can tailor your stay to whether you’re particularly interested in architecture and local history or in getting active by the water.

San Julián: Church, Ship Graffiti, and Local History

Construction of the parish church of San Julián began at the start of the 16th century, and it is built mostly of dressed sandstone blocks. Its single-nave layout, rectangular tower, and rib vault give the building a clearly defined form. In front of the church stands a sandstone cross dating from the mid-16th century. The doors are also worth a closer look: maritime graffiti depict ships, names, and symbols from the 18th and 19th centuries. They are considered unique in Bizkaia and rare elsewhere along the Cantabrian coast.

The church also tells the story of the town’s past. San Julián was once the municipality’s only parish; it also served as a venue for neighborhood meetings and important public events. Another trace of history shapes the interior: bombardments during the Spanish Civil War, from 1936 to 1939, damaged the apse. The damage led to an unusual interior design. By looking at the graffiti, architectural features, and historical role together, you can encounter different facets of the local heritage here.

Palatial Houses and Other Historical Traces

Near the church, you can also take in other historic buildings. Casa González Sota is a palatial house that stands out for its façade and monumental entrance. It is about 150 meters from the parish church. Casa de Villar is one of the 17th- and 18th-century palatial houses beside the church. The two houses offer architectural contrasts with San Julián and add secular architectural history to the walk.

The Castle of Muñatones, built in the 14th and 15th centuries and considered an outstanding example of Bizkaia’s architectural heritage, is also near San Julián de Muskiz. The San Julián washhouse has been restored as a public space. These buildings differ in function and period; together, they offer several ways to explore the area’s history. The historic center of San Julián de Muskiz is also listed as Cultural Heritage Site 140 on the Camino de la Costa.

Routes with Different Destinations

Two routes with different starting points are worth considering when planning your walks. The 3.88-kilometer San Juan–San Julián circular route connects Muskiz town center with San Julián. The Vía Verde de Itsaslur is 3.5 kilometers long and runs through the area around San Julián, from Pobeña to Kobaron; it is suitable for walking or cycling. Their lengths are similar, but their endpoints and stated uses differ. Consider which route and activity best fit your plans. Routes and conditions may change; check before your visit.

Coast, Water Activities, and the Socorro Chapel

Activities at La Arena beach near San Julián de Muskiz include surfing, windsurfing, and canoeing. Surf lessons are also offered in the central beach area. As these offerings may change, check what’s available during your visit. Beach activities provide a different focus from the historic buildings and longer routes.

Another place to visit nearby is the chapel of Nuestra Señora del Socorro. You can reach it via the Paseo de Pobeña or from La Arena beach; access routes may change. Its rectangular floor plan and single nave define its architecture. According to a maritime legend, fishermen built the chapel around 1768 after surviving a severe storm. The legend should be distinguished from documented building history. If you’re focusing your trip on cultural sites, the chapel offers a different perspective on maritime tradition from the ship graffiti on the church doors.
