Discover Loiu through its buildings, memorial sites and landscapes. Notable cultural highlights include the church of San Pedro, the Cementerio inglés and the hermitage of San Miguel de Arbildua; mills, a circular walking route, a park and an annual fair add to the picture. The highlights differ considerably: sacred architecture offers specific building details, the cemetery tells a story of war, while the route and fair reveal other sides of the town.

Church of San Pedro: medieval origins and an organ

The church of San Pedro dates back to a medieval building from the 12th century. Its architectural history is also reflected in Gothic features, including two pointed-arch portals. Another defining feature is the oak organ, inaugurated in 2007: it is six metres wide, eight metres long and two metres deep. Its features include 1,200 pipes and 21 stops. San Pedro thus brings together medieval origins and an instrument inaugurated at a later date, with precisely stated dimensions. Those interested in sacred architecture will find both features of church construction and specific details about the organ here.

Memorial sites and historic buildings

The Cementerio inglés contains the remains of 56 Commonwealth and Allied casualties from the Second World War, as well as seven other people buried there during the First World War. The variety of trees is another distinctive feature of the cemetery. Its origins date back to 1929, when the remains were transferred to Loiu from the former cemetery in Abandoibarra; this transfer marked the beginning of the Cementerio inglés.

The hermitage of San Miguel de Arbildua (Lauroeta) is associated with two historical events. In earlier times, it was the venue for the General Assemblies of the Uribe Vicariate, and it was also the scene of a tragic event during the bandit wars of Bizkaia. The twin rectories, Las Casas Curales Gemelas, offer another specific historical reference: they were built in 1801 to plans by Juan de Zabala and Juan Antonio Acha. The Palacio Larraburu dates from the 18th century. Together, these places offer different ways to explore Loiu’s history, from church assemblies to buildings with known dates.

Mills and the Paseo vuelta a Loiu

The mills of Loiu highlighted for their landscape include Txitorreta, Errotatxu and Goiengo Errota. The Paseo vuelta a Loiu offers a different view of the mill landscape: this easy circular route follows a bidegorri from the centre of Zabaloetxe to the Larrakoetxe junction. Its description highlights panoramic views and a natural setting. The route also passes the mill at Goirengo Errota, which is still operating. If its operation is important for your visit, check its current status in advance. The walk also passes the Aula de la Naturaleza. These landmarks and the two endpoints provide clear reference points for the circular route, without specifying a walking time.

Park, fair and dining

Parque del Ayuntamiento is a large, tree-filled park around the town hall. Its facilities include children’s play equipment, a zip line and a large castle. Alongside churches, historic sites and the circular route, these features make the park part of the town’s public recreational landscape.

The Loiu food and crafts fair takes place on the third Sunday in October. Numerous stalls throughout the town offer food products and handicrafts. If you are planning your trip around the fair, check the date for the relevant year; the stalls and offerings may also change. For dining, SidrerĂa asador Loiu offers various menus, including a typical sidrerĂa menu and a tasting menu. If you are planning a specific visit, it is advisable to ask directly in advance about the current menu offerings.
