Explore Erandio through its cultural history, routes and landscapes. The six thematic cultural routes of Erandio Begibistan cover Erandio’s geological origins, its formation as an anteiglesia, and its industrial past. Visitors are welcome; conditions may vary from one route to another. To plan your visit, it is worth choosing a route based on your interests: historic architecture, landscapes or traces of industrial history.

Cultural Routes Between the Riverside and the Hills

The Astrabudua–Lutxana route follows a riverside path that historically served as a link between the inland area and the coast. Women in particular used it to tow ships upriver to Bilbao with a towline. Work on the estuary is therefore also part of this route’s history. The Enekuri–Erandiogoikoa route offers a different perspective on the landscape: it follows the meanders of the Asua River between the eastern slope of Monte San Pablo and the Txorierri Valley.

The Goierri de Erandio route passes through the higher part of the municipality and invites you to walk among mills, farmhouses, towers and hermitages, away from the industrial activity along the estuary. Its listed stops and landscape features offer a different focus from the historic riverside path. You can choose between routes that highlight different aspects of the municipality.

Buildings and Industrial History

The Church of Santa Maria is said to have existed as early as around 1300. The present building is a late Gothic place of worship dating from the late 15th century, approximately 1490. Its architectural details include three Gothic portals with archivolts and slender, fluted columns with simple capitals, as well as a bell tower. The tomb of the Martiartu family stands outside the church and is one of the outstanding examples of Gothic funerary sculpture in Bizkaia.

The La Esperanza housing estate in Altzaga was built as a cooperative in 1923 by members who worked at Sociedad Española de Construcciones Navales. The municipal architect Ángel Líbano designed it in the Neo-Basque style. Torre de Martiartu is a 16th-century Renaissance building on the slope of Monte Umbe in the Goierri district. It has both residential and defensive features and was almost always occupied from the time it was built until it fell into disrepair.

The Tartanga washhouse also tells the story of the municipality and its social history: Erandio Town Hall had it built in 1893 to plans by master builder Casto de Zabala as part of improved hygiene measures. It was used for washing clothes until around the 1970s. Compañía Española de Pinturas La Internacional is considered an iconic example of industrial architecture on the right bank of the estuary.

Nature and Geological Formations

The Astrabudua wetland lies on the border between Astrabudua and Leioa and is home to a wide variety of animal and plant species. The Geological Route passes through volcanic rocks and lava flows, then circles the base of a visible, steeply sloping crater. These two features offer different points of interest for planning your visit: the wetland is notable for its diversity of animal and plant species, while the geological route focuses on volcanic formations.

Walks, Cycle Path and Getting There

For a walk with a specified distance, consider the La Vega de Altzaga route: it is 1.7 kilometres long, has a low difficulty level and an estimated duration of 25 minutes. The Ría-Erandio route is an almost straight walking or cycling path of less than ten kilometres along the right bank between Bilbao and Leioa. It leads to Erandio without straying far from the estuary. The route is also an option if you would like to explore Erandio on foot or by bike as part of the journey between Bilbao and Leioa.

Route conditions and signage may change; check them before setting out. Metro Line 1 serves the Ría-Erandio route, with stations in central Erandio and in Lutxana and Astrabudua. Check the latest timetable when planning your journey.
