If you’re looking for a hotel in Busturi-Axpe, you can plan your trip around the area’s landscapes, trails and cultural themes. Several hiking trails start in Axpe and San Bartolomé, but each has a different focus. Atxapunte offers views of the neighbourhoods, meadows and marshland; other trails lead through wooded slopes or to historic sites. Txakoli Amunategi and an open-air exhibition in Axpe add the history of wine and the area to these perspectives. This gives you the opportunity to decide whether you’d like to spend your stay primarily hiking, enjoying the landscape or exploring local history.

Landscape and Hiking Trails in Busturi-Axpe

Atxapunte lies between Axpe and San Bartolomé and is covered with Cantabrian holm oaks. From the summit, you can see the neighbourhoods, meadows and marshland of Busturia. The viewpoint combines views of the landscape with views of the neighbourhoods—a different perspective from the trail descriptions, which focus on forests and streams. The holm oaks and the views give Atxapunte a distinct focus among Busturi-Axpe’s landscape attractions.

The hiking trail “The shady slopes of Busturia” leads from San Bartolomé and Axpe through the wooded slopes of Bistalegre and Arribieta. The route passes well-preserved streams and old paved paths. Unlike the summit views at Atxapunte, the focus here is on wooded slopes and the streams along the trail. If you include this route in your plans, check local conditions before setting out.

Trails to Monte Sollube and Along the Old Camino Real

Another hiking trail leads from San Bartolomé and Axpe along remote paths and through lush riparian forest to the meadows on the slopes of Monte Sollube, and on to the Roman necropolis of Tribisburu. This route combines a journey through forest and hillside meadows with an archaeological destination. This sets it apart from Atxapunte viewpoint, which focuses on views of neighbourhoods, meadows and marshland.

Another route starts in Axpe and follows a paved section of the old Camino Real on the way to Sukarrieta. This road connected Gernika and Bermeo through Busturia. The routes therefore also differ in their historical connections: one continues to the Roman necropolis of Tribisburu, while the other follows a section of the old connecting route. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out.

Memorial Site in Axpe and the History of Txakoli

An open-air exhibition in Axpe commemorates the experiences of Busturia residents who were shot illegally between 1936 and 1937. It provides a sobering historical counterpoint to the area’s landscape and hiking attractions. If you’d also like to explore the area’s history during your trip, this exhibition is one of the named places to visit in Axpe.

Txakoli Amunategi can also be placed in context through specific dates. The wine belongs to the Bizkaiko Txakolina designation of origin and comes from the family farmhouse of the same name. Written records date Amunategi wine to 1812; the winery building, however, was built in 1849. The two dates refer to different things: 1812 is the year of the written records for the wine, while 1849 is the year the building was constructed. This places the history of wine and buildings side by side in Busturi-Axpe without suggesting that the dates refer to the same thing.

Getting There by Bus and Train

Bizkaibus route A3515 connects Bilbao, Amorebieta-Etxano, Gernika-Lumo and Bermeo; stops are located in San Kristobal, San Bartolomé and Axpe. Euskotren connects Busturia by train with Bilbao, Gernika, Amorebieta and Bermeo. These details provide different ways to plan your journey: the bus route lists three stops, while the train information lists the connected towns. Check the current bus route and train timetable before travelling. You can then plan your journey using the connection that best suits your travel plans.
