Discover Legutio
Accommodation in Legutio
Legutio brings together local history, hiking trails, heritage sites and a landscape shaped by reservoirs. To plan your trip, you can first consider what you would like to focus on: historic architecture, paths through forests and countryside, water activities or traditional pottery. The attractions and themes differ considerably; the following points will help you match your interests to a stay in Legutio.
Local history and architecture
On 15 April 1333, Legutio was granted the title of Villa Real by Alfonso XI of Castile. The Arco del Cristo offers a visible link to the once-walled town: it is the only surviving entrance gate. The Church of San Blas also invites visitors to explore different periods of architecture. It is a 14th-century Romanesque church; its features include a Renaissance tower and portal, as well as a Churrigueresque altarpiece. Several caseríos, typical examples of Basque-Atlantic rural architecture, also stand around the historic town centre. In Legutio, you can therefore encounter both the town’s history and a range of architectural styles.
Recurring festivities include the patron saint festival of San Blas on 3 February. The Fiesta de las Cofradías takes place on the Sunday after 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. If you are interested in local traditions, these two dates offer a specific point of reference for planning; they fall at different times of the year.
Hiking trails with different route profiles
A walking trail leads from Legutio through an oak forest to the 868-metre summit of Monte Albertia. Monte Albertia also offers a natural viewpoint overlooking the Urrunaga, Albina and Zadorra reservoirs. An outing here can focus both on the forest trail and on views of several bodies of water.
The Vuelta al monte Albertia route varies depending on how you travel: it is rated easy on foot and is fully accessible by bicycle; its cycling difficulty is rated easy to moderate. Another option is the approximately 10-kilometre section of the GR-38 connecting Legutio with Otxandio. From Legutio to Otxandio, it leads to the Albina Reservoir along paths through oak, beech and cypress forests. When choosing a route, you can therefore take into account both the stated difficulty of the Vuelta and the approximate length and forest sections of the GR-38 stage.
Heritage trails and history in the landscape
Several trails explore sites from the Spanish Civil War. The Albertia Heritage Trail starts at Legutio’s old cemetery and passes through beech forest to the trenches. Joseren baso is 3.2 kilometres long and leads from the area by the Albina Reservoir to a Spanish Civil War fortification. The Txabolapea Heritage Trail starts at the Church of San Blas and leads to a pine forest where trenches and traces of bombing from that period remain.
The three trails differ in their starting points and the historic sites described: the cemetery and beech forest on the Albertia trail, the area by the Albina Reservoir at Joseren baso, and the Church of San Blas and pine forest on the Txabolapea trail. If you include one of these themed trails in your plans, you can choose based on its starting point and the historic destination that interests you.
Reservoirs, nature and water activities
The Urrunaga Reservoir is part of the Natura 2000 network. The Zadorra reservoir system is also important for waterbirds: it serves as a wintering and breeding area, as well as a stopover and feeding site along their migration routes. The system’s use varies according to the birds’ needs: it provides habitat in winter and during the breeding season, and also serves a purpose during migration.
Water skiing is possible at the Campo de Regatas on the Urrunaga Reservoir; the area also accommodates sailboats up to 12 metres long. The reservoirs around Legutio are also suitable for rowing, recreation and relaxation. The range therefore extends from specific water activities to a more peaceful stay by the water. The information about water skiing and sailboats applies to the Campo de Regatas, while rowing and recreation are described for the reservoirs around Legutio.
Traditional pottery
At the Museo-taller de Alfarería Tradicional Vasca, you can watch potters at work in the production workshops and hear explanations of their techniques and working methods. The visit therefore combines a demonstration with an insight into the production process. As operating details may change, check the current visitor options before your visit.
