Cap des Moro was developed in the 1980s. This allows you to distinguish between the settlement history of Cap des Moro, topics in the surrounding area and local life in Santanyí.

Cap des Moro and the Surrounding Area

The history of Cap des Moro is linked to its development in the 1980s. In Cala Figuera, stone from Santanyí was loaded onto ships for transport. This is a specific historical connection to the neighbouring town, while the development of the settlement describes Cap des Moro itself. Both aspects offer different perspectives on the region: the development of the destination on the one hand, and the harbour’s former use for transporting stone on the other.

Nearby, Es Cap des Moro cave lies on a coastal cliff. It contains six small niches that were used as places of worship in prehistoric times. Also nearby, at Torre d'en Beu, are climbing walls made of soft marès limestone. They reach heights of up to 15–18 metres and are located above a rock platform. Numerous boulders at the foot of the wall make the site a bouldering area; it is considered one of the best in the south. The cave and the climbing rocks thus represent different aspects of the landscape and its use.

Santanyí: Buildings in the Town Centre

In the wider destination of Santanyí, Plaça Major is the town centre. The market and festivals are held there. Alongside the town hall, the parish church of Sant Andreu is one of the two main buildings on the square. It was built from Santanyí stone and houses a monumental Baroque organ from Palma’s Dominican monastery. Construction of the church began on 25 July 1786 and lasted 25 years.

El Roser is also part of Santanyí’s architectural history: the former parish church was built in the first half of the 14th century in a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic. During pirate raids, it regularly served as a refuge for the population and was therefore fortified. La Porta Murada is a 16th-century gate tower in Santanyí’s defensive walls. Those interested in religious buildings will find a different story here from that of the remains of the town fortifications: the buildings represent both religious architecture and the protection of the town.

Market and Regional Produce

Santanyí’s market takes place all year round on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It extends across Plaça Major and the surrounding streets. More than 150 stalls offer local produce, clothing and handicrafts; the number of stalls may vary. Regional products sold at the market include sobrassada, oil and wine. Santanyí’s narrow streets are also home to several art galleries and studios. The market and galleries offer different perspectives: one gives an insight into regional produce and crafts, while the others showcase the town’s art scene.

Festivals Throughout the Year

Recurring festivals in Santanyí include Sant Antoni on 17 January. On the eve of the festival, traditional bonfires and barbecues are held, and animals are blessed. The Fira de Santanyí takes place on the third Saturday in October and focuses on agriculture, crafts and industry. The patron saint festival of Sant Andreu on 30 November includes a solemn mass as well as numerous social and cultural activities during the festival week. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the specific event dates before booking.

For choosing when to travel, the market and festivals offer different points of reference: the market is part of the weekly schedule year-round, while the celebrations mentioned are tied to specific days or a festival week. Architecture and art galleries complement these seasonal occasions with topics that are not tied to a single festival date.
