Sant Vicent De Sa Cala
Accommodation in Sant Vicent De Sa Cala
Sant Vicent de sa Cala brings together a historic church complex, a Punic sanctuary and recurring patron saint’s day festivities. Depending on whether you are interested in architectural history, archaeology or an event, you can give your trip a different focus.
Church and historic complex
The historic complex is defined by a circle with a radius of 250 metres, with the church at its centre. This clearly defined area makes the church a focal point when exploring the town’s historic character. Several traditional Ibizan farmhouses have been preserved within the complex. Together, the church and farmhouses represent two aspects of the built heritage: the religious centre and traditional rural architecture. If you prefer to trace a place’s history through specific buildings rather than abstract dates, you will find both in a clearly defined setting here.
Architecture, history and views
The church was built at the beginning of the 19th century to serve the faithful in the northeast of Ibiza. Its nave has a single aisle and is covered by a barrel vault; the building also has six chapels. A single-nave church has one central nave; a barrel vault is a vaulted ceiling that extends lengthwise. These terms make the architecture easy to understand even if you have no specialist background. The church stands on a small hill and offers panoramic views over the valley and the sea.
Cova des Culleram: sanctuary and archaeological site
Cova des Culleram is a Punic sanctuary dating from the 5th to the 2nd century BC and dedicated to the Carthaginian goddess Tanit. The site yielded more than 600 complete terracotta votive figurines. Its date, dedication and finds make it an archaeological counterpart to the 19th-century church: rather than a more recent history of church construction, the focus here is a sanctuary from the Punic period. The sanctuary is open to the public in summer and by prior arrangement. As access conditions may change, check before travelling whether a visit is possible on your chosen date.
Patron saint’s day festivities in April
The patron saint’s day festivities take place every year and are celebrated on 5 April. They combine local traditions, culture and sport with an extensive programme for all age groups. If you want to plan your trip around the festivities, check that year’s programme before arranging your dates. For several years, the festivities have also included a traditional Ballada pagesa at Pou des Baladre in April. Pou des Baladre is next to the stream in sa Cala, behind the church and near the path towards ses Caletes.
