Discover Sant Miguel De Balansat
Accommodation in Sant Miguel De Balansat
Sant Miguel De Balansat brings together a distinctive church, local crafts, recurring festivals and a designated walking trail. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish the attractions in the town from those in the nearby coastal area around Port de Sant Miquel: the church and events shape the town, while the beach, water sports and Cova de Can Marçà cave are nearby at the port.
Fortified church and distinctive architecture
The fortified church of Sant Miquel de Balansat was built in the 16th century on the rocky outcrop of Puig de Missa to keep watch over the area. It combines religious and defensive functions. There are murals on its thick walls, and its layout also sets the building apart: it is the only church in Ibiza with a T-shaped floor plan. The building therefore offers a chance to see both its defensive purpose and an unusual architectural design.
Recurring events include the patron saint’s festivals of Sant Miquel de Balansat on September 29. Another occasion is the festival at the Es Pou d’Albarqueta spring: it takes place on the first Sunday after Santa MarĂa on August 5 and features local dances and pastries. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the date and programme in advance.
Crafts and local heritage
Next to the church are the studio, shop and jewellery workshop of designer Natasha Collis. The workshop creates unique handcrafted jewellery. The shop is in a farmhouse more than 300 years old, making the building a distinct part of the local craft scene in its own right. There is also a viewpoint and a bronze statue in a small square in the town, honouring Ibizan poet Marià Villangómez (1913–2002). The statue was created by Basque sculptor Lourdes Umérez.
Seasonal markets and folklore
The Sant Miquel craft market takes place in Sant Miquel de Balansat every Thursday afternoon during the summer months. Separate from this is the Ibizan folklore performance at Puig de Missa: it is scheduled for Thursdays from May to September at 18:00 and includes traditional dance and a small craft market. Although both take place on the same day of the week, they differ in season and programme. If you visit outside the stated season, do not assume these offerings are available year-round.
Walking trail and coastal surroundings
The Balansat Trail PR-EI-106 runs for 18.82 kilometres between Port de Sant Miquel beach and the town of Sant Miquel de Balansat. Road sections alternate with paved and unpaved paths, and the route offers panoramic views of Es Amunts along the way. The varying path surfaces and the trail’s length are useful details when deciding how to include the walk in your travel plans. As individual sections may change, check current trail conditions before setting out.
In the nearby area around Port de Sant Miquel, also known as Port de Balansat, there is a coarse-sand beach about 100 metres long. Water sports and boat trips are available there. Cova de Can Marçà is also at the port, inside a rocky cliff. The cave is about 100,000 years old; a guided visit lasts approximately 40 minutes. This gives you a clear distinction when choosing the focus of your trip: the town is known for its church architecture, crafts and events, while the port offers the coast and the cave.
