Siero: Routes, Museums and Asturian Traditions
Accommodation in Siero
Siero combines riverside paths and routes through mining landscapes with palace architecture, small museums and local produce. You can therefore choose different focuses for your stay: a route on foot or by bike, cultural history in Pola de Siero, or an insight into Asturian traditions. Each of the sights and activities offers its own way to experience the area.
Trails through varied landscapes
The Ruta de los Palacios Rurales is a 25-kilometre linear route from Pola de Siero to Meres. It begins at the Palacio del Marqués de Santa Cruz de Marcenado in Pola de Siero. If you plan to take this route, bear in mind its full stated length and check the current signposting and trail conditions before setting out. The Ruta del Carbón offers a different perspective: this walking and cycling route passes through mining landscapes in the Candín Valley between Siero and Langreo.
The Senda Fluvial del Río Nora follows the banks of the Río Nora along a nearly flat route. It is fully accessible to wheeled vehicles. Unlike the Senda del Río Nora, the Ruta del Carbón is a walking and cycling route through mining landscapes in the Candín Valley between Siero and Langreo. Another route with a stated distance is the first stage of the Conexión Costa - Primitivo route: it runs 21.6 kilometres from Casquita to La Pola Siero. It passes through Vega (Sariego), El Castru and Aveno on the way to La Pola Siero. The Ruta Minera de Jovellanos begins at the Palacio de Valdesoto.
A palace, a church and distinctive collections
The Palacio del Marqués de Santa Cruz de Marcenado is a typical example of Baroque palace architecture from the last quarter of the 17th century. Its gardens are now part of Parque Alfonso X. Those interested in architectural history can complement their visit with a look at the Iglesia de San Esteban de los Caballeros, which is first mentioned in a written deed of donation from 1240.
The Museo del Hórreo en Miniatura (MUHOMI) displays twenty handcrafted miniature models of Asturian hórreos from the eastern, central and western areas. The Museo del Sifón - La Cotorra offers a very different focus: its collection includes more than 15,000 siphon bottles from various places of origin, including London, Paris, Poland and Argentina. The collection illustrates the development of the siphon. Siero is thus home to both a regionally focused miniature collection and an extensive collection of bottles from around the world.
Local produce, festivals and market days
Local produce is also linked to specific places in Siero. Fabes de la granja beans are grown in the parish of Argüelles and have a protected designation of origin. Queso de Varé is made in Varé (Anes): the cheese is white, cylindrical and made from aged goat’s milk. Siero also has a strong cider-making tradition, with twelve producing lagar cider houses. The parish of Tiñana has the highest cider production per resident within the municipality.
For help planning around event dates: the Fiesta de los Huevos Pintos takes place in La Pola Siero on the Tuesday after Easter Sunday. It features festively decorated stalls selling painted eggs; individual programme details may vary. The Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Carmen y Carmín originated in 1695. La Pola Siero also has a weekly market on Tuesdays and a livestock market on Mondays and Thursdays. As market dates may change, check the details if a visit is important to your plans.
Getting there and planning your stay
If you are travelling from León, take the A-66 or N-630 to Mieres on the way to Pola de Siero. From there, follow the AS-1 towards Gijón and take the Pola de Siero exit. Check the current route before setting out, as roads and junctions may change. When choosing accommodation, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your stay: would you like to plan a route, visit architectural sights and collections, or focus on market days and local produce? The routes, cultural sites and dates mentioned above offer different points of reference without requiring you to choose just one theme for your visit.
