With 14.5 km of mapped galleries, Cueva Huerta is one of Asturias’s largest karst caves. At the same time, visitor access is clearly restricted: visits are possible only as part of a guided tour. Around 300 m of the cave can be explored via wooden walkways and stairs. Check the booking conditions before your trip.

Caves, Waterfalls and Nature

Cueva Huerta was declared a Natural Monument in 2002 and included in the network of protected natural areas of the Principality of Asturias. Near the cave is a recreational area with a viewpoint, parking, barbecue grills, tables and benches. One possible starting or finishing point for the Senda del Oso is at the recreational area near Cueva Huerta. As the condition of the facilities may change, it is worth checking the current situation before your visit.

A striking natural attraction is Cascada del Xiblu: three waterfalls, one above the other, reach a combined height of around 100 m. The path to the waterfall is signposted as PR AS 269 “Hayedo de Monte Grande y Cascada del Xiblu”. The hiking route through Hayedo de Montegrande is accessible and ends at Cascada del Xiblu.

Hiking Trails with Varying Levels of Difficulty

The Senda del Oso follows the former route of a 19th-century mining railway and passes through small tunnels. This gives the route a distinctive historical connection: alongside the journey through the landscape, the railway line’s former use is also part of the experience.

The circular Ruta del Puerto de Marabio, signposted as PR-AS 72, is rated as an easy hike and takes a little over three hours. Conditions can vary by season. When planning, therefore, consider both the stated duration and the seasonal conditions on the route.

The trail to Abrigos de Fresnedo, signposted as PR AS-158, is more challenging. Elevation changes and technical requirements make it somewhat difficult. Before setting out, check whether the trail conditions and requirements are suitable for your experience.

Cultural History and Cave Art

The Colegiata de San Pedro was built between 1069 and 1076. Its architecture combines Asturian pre-Romanesque elements with early Romanesque features. The sacristy museum preserves the mummified remains of the Marqués de Valdecarzana and his son Pedro de Miranda. The Colegiata thus brings together architectural history and a tangible insight into local heritage.

The Parque de la Prehistoria de Teverga presents important examples of European cave art. The park also includes five animal enclosures with six different species. Abrigos de Fresnedo adds another highlight: it is considered Asturias’s most complex site of schematic rock art, as well as the one with the greatest number of depictions.

The Camín Real de la Mesa is also one of the region’s historical highlights. From the 1st century BC, it served as a Roman road and a northern branch of the Vía de la Plata. In this way, hiking trails, cave art and historic buildings offer different focal points for a stay.

Plan Your Stay

If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Teverga, you can plan your trip around your interests: caves and landscapes, hiking or cultural history each offer a different focus. For the trails, the duration, seasonal conditions and stated requirements can help you plan suitable excursions.
