Tramacastilla de Tena offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: woodland and meadow landscapes, trails to gorges and lakes, horseback riding experiences, and local history. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to consider whether you would rather devote the day to a particular route, an excursion to an ibón, or churches and festival traditions.

Forests, Hiking Trails and Birds

The village is surrounded by pine and oak forests and meadows. Nearby is the Bosque del Betato, a dense forest of boxwood, beech and oak trees, and hazel shrubs. The Camino Viejo is an old path connecting Tramacastilla de Tena and Saqués. It passes through the Hayedo del Betato beech forest and the Barranco Gorgol gorge. Another hiking option is the Senda Circular a Saqués: it is 4.7 km long, has an elevation gain of 210 m, and takes about 1.5 hours. Along the way, it passes the Barranco de Gorgol and descends to Saqués. This gives you the choice of an old connecting path or a circular route with specific distance and elevation figures for a walk.

The Sandiniés–Tramacastilla ornithological route runs from Sandiniés via Picaldiecho to Tramacastilla de Tena. The species listed for the route include griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, black kites, magpies, wallcreepers, house martins, chaffinches and coal tits. The birds you may spot can vary by season. Winter is also a feature of the area: the Aramon Formigal ski resort is near Tramacastilla de Tena.

Excursions by Train, Bike and Horse

The Tren de Tramacastilla takes visitors from Tramacastilla de Tena to the Ibón de las Paules. It departs from a wooden stop at the entrance to the village, next to the municipal car park. The train journey takes about 50 minutes. To return from the Ibón de las Paules, you can take the train or follow a signposted hiking route. As timetables and journey times may change, check the latest timetable before your excursion.

There are also cycling routes to lakes and into the Sierra de La Partacua. One tour starts in Tramacastilla de Tena, heads towards Sandiniés and follows the route signposted for the La Partacua cross-country ski area. After about 10.5 km, it reaches the La Paul de la Riguala plateau and the Ibón de Tramacastilla. Another cycling tour to the Ibón de las Paules also leads to the Ibón de Tramacastilla and the La Partacua cross-country ski area. The destinations described give the tours different points of focus within the region.

The Centro Ecuestre El Betato offers horse rides, horseback excursions and riding lessons for beginners. The rides include trips through the beech forest; four-hour excursions go as far as the Ibón de Piedrafita. The Conociendo a los Caballos experience includes a visit to horses in their natural habitat and accompanying them out into the countryside. Check the latest details of this experience before booking.

Churches and Festival Traditions

The Romanesque church of Tramacastilla de Tena, dedicated to Saint Martin, dates from the 12th century. The Church of San Martín has a Renaissance altarpiece from the 16th century. Another landmark in the village’s history is the Ermita de San Juan Bautista: the rectangular building dates from the late 17th century and has a Baroque altarpiece from the early 18th century. Its reliefs depict San Juan, San Ramón and San Antonio de Padua.

The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario take place on the first weekend of October. Festival traditions include a ronda, a procession through the village houses. Young people perform the traditional Paloteao dance and offer toasts to their hosts. The church buildings, artworks and festivities thus offer different ways to explore the history and culture of the village.
