Formigal lies at the foot of the Aramón Formigal ski resort. This makes it a natural starting point for planning a winter trip, while the range of activities extends beyond the snow. In summer, hiking routes are an option, and the town’s churches offer a distinct historical perspective. You can explore Formigal through its activities and the seasons, rather than associating the destination exclusively with skiing.

Winter experiences in Formigal

In winter, NieveAventura in the Valle de Portalet offers a snow experience geared towards families. This includes a snowshoe route through the mountain area, marked with Snowys and featuring several obstacles. The activity is seasonal and may vary; check the dates for your trip.

The “Paseo en telesilla” experience takes you from Formigal to the resort area by chairlift or gondola. No skiing experience is required. The ride reaches an altitude of nearly 2,000 metres and offers views across the entire Valle de Tena. Lift operations are seasonal. Before your trip, check whether this experience is available on your dates.

In winter, you can choose between two distinct experiences: a snowshoe route and a scenic lift ride.

Hiking in summer

In summer, hiking routes in Formigal-Panticosa offer a different way to explore the ski resort. One specific hike is the GR 11 Formigal–Ibones de Anayet.

The route starts beside Corral de las Mulas on the A-136 towards Portalet, three kilometres from Formigal. From there, it climbs gently at first, running parallel to the Barranco de Culivillas. At the Formigal ski station, the route joins the GR 11. For navigation, note that Corral de las Mulas is the starting point, and the three-kilometre distance refers to its distance from Formigal. Conditions on the route may vary; check them before setting out.

Churches and history

The pre-Romanesque church of Formigal was built in the 11th century and is part of the group of Serrablo churches. The Iglesia del Salvador de Basarán in Formigal houses two further examples, each with its own history: a baptismal font from the 12th century, which comes from the parish church of Ruesta, and the remains of a 14th-century mural from the Ermita de la Virgen de Basarán. These dates place the building and artworks in different centuries, giving the town’s history several points of reference.

A culinary highlight

The Las Mugas dining experience pairs local produce with a culinary concept that brings its flavours together with the natural surroundings. Menus and partners may change. This culinary perspective complements Formigal’s winter activities, hiking routes and cultural history.
