San Juan de Mozarrifar is a rural district of Zaragoza. Sports and routes are the main features of the area for trip planning: the municipal sports center brings together several facilities, while the GR 234 and the Anillo Verde Norte offer different route options. Historic buildings and the area’s history round out these themes.

Sports at the Centro Deportivo Municipal

The Centro Deportivo Municipal San Juan de Mozarrifar is one of the largest outdoor sports complexes outside the urban area of Zaragoza and is located in the rural district of San Juan de Mozarrifar. Its sports pavilion has Zaragoza’s first internationally approved inline hockey rink. The sports complex includes two outdoor swimming pools, a tennis court, three padel courts and a frontón court. Thus, a specialized inline hockey facility and several other sports facilities come together in one municipal complex. If a particular facility is important to your trip, check the current operating information in advance; the operation of individual facilities may change.

Walking Routes and Trails

The GR 234 “Camino de la Jorgeada” runs in three stages over a total of 76 kilometers from Plaza del Pilar in Zaragoza to the Ermita de San Jorge in Huesca. It reaches San Juan de Mozarrifar via a short paved section. The total length of 76 kilometers and the three stages refer to the entire route between its endpoints; the short paved section, by contrast, describes the approach to San Juan. The GR 234 is catalogued and inventoried as a tourist resource by the Government of Aragón. Its operator has committed to regular maintenance and promoting awareness of the route.

The Anillo Verde Norte complements the stage route with a rest area in San Juan de Mozarrifar. Some of its sections run along farm tracks between huertas and along paths beside natural areas. This makes it easy to distinguish these details from those about the GR 234: the endpoints, total length and stages are central there, while the rest area and the character of individual sections are central here. The route of the Anillo Verde Norte may change; check the latest information before using it.

Local History and Architectural History

The origins of San Juan de Mozarrifar are associated with a settlement of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. The parish church in the area dates from the late 15th century and was remodeled in the Baroque style in the first half of the 18th century. The two details point to different historical reference points: the Order’s settlement concerns the origins of the area, while the centuries mentioned concern the church’s architectural history. The time gap marks two separate building phases, not a single construction process.

After the Spanish Civil War, San Juan de Mozarrifar was the site of a camp for Republican prisoners. It was used to detain and classify prisoners before their transfer to other state prisons.
