Fayón: Culture, History and Activities on the Water
Accommodation in Fayón
Fayón offers a range of themes for a stay: the history of the Battle of the Ebro, trails by the reservoir and activities on the water. Highlights range from museum collections to places connected with old Fayón and the Spanish Civil War. When planning, you can consider these themes separately: the museum collection and guided trips to the trenches offer a different focus from a circular trail or activities on the water.
The Battle of the Ebro and Cultural Insights
The Museo Fayón Ebro 1938. La Batalla displays models, contemporary documents and posters. The collection also includes rifles, cartridges, bayonets, uniforms and materials dropped by aircraft. The permanent exhibition includes a representative camp layout featuring radio equipment, a canteen, a command post, a guard post, a bunker and a field hospital. Individual exhibits are thus presented alongside a depiction of different areas of a military camp.
Every year, Fayón hosts a historical reenactment of the Battle of the Ebro. Around 300 reenactors, along with boats, aircraft, cavalry and historic vehicles, are among the event’s features. Dates and scale may vary; check the latest event information for your planned travel dates.
Guided trips to trenches near Fayón are offered in connection with the museum. Check the reservation terms for these trips in advance. Another testament to military history is Posición nº36: its structure is completely circular and is considered unusual in the military architecture of the Spanish Civil War.
Walking Trails by the Reservoir
The PR-Z 160 runs along the reservoir shore and passes the bell tower rising out of the water, below the ruins of Castell de Faió. It is also listed as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón under the name PR-Z 160: Ruta de la Ermita del Pilar. The PR-Z 161: Vuelta a la Ermita de San Jorge is a 16-kilometre circular route, also listed as a tourist trail in Aragón, and connects to the Camino Natural del Ebro.
The routes have different features as described: the PR-Z 160 focuses on the reservoir shore and the bell tower; the PR-Z 161 is described as a circular route with a stated length and also connects to the Camino Natural del Ebro. Maintenance and trail conditions may change. Check the current route information before setting out on a hike.
Boat Trips and Activities on the Water
El Llaüt de Fayón offers guided trips on the Matarraña River and at its confluence with the Ebro. The history of old Fayón is shared during the trip. The route starts and ends at the Embarcadero de la Reixaga in Fayón. Some guided trips include a stop at the Castillo, where visitors can explore the remains of a 14th-century fortress on a hill.
You can also reach the bell tower of old Fayón by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. These offer different ways to experience the waterscape: a guided trip with historical commentary, or reaching the bell tower using one of these watercraft. Activities in Fayón can be booked through local adventure tourism companies; provider information may change.
Art and Tasting
The Espacio María Pilar Burges in Fayón displays 80 works by the first woman in Aragón to earn a doctorate in Fine Arts. It offers a distinct focus alongside the town’s military history.
A tasting of extra virgin olive oil is also offered in Fayón. It is part of a project promoted by the Cooperativa Agraria San Sebastián and the Asociación de Empresarios y Emprendedores de Fayón. The participating venues may change.
