Orés: Trails, Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Orés
If you’re looking for a hotel in Orés, the area’s main attractions can help you plan your stay: hiking trails and scenery, church art and local traditions. The viewpoints and routes offer different highlights; buildings and artworks reflect several historical periods. Festivals and pilgrimages are also part of the local character, but each has its own dates and conditions.
Landscape, Views and Trails
Orés’s natural heritage lies in the northwest of the Sierra de Luna massif. Pine, oak and holm oak trees cover its densely wooded mountains. The Mirador de la Atalaya is on the hill above Orés and offers views of the Sierra de Santo Domingo, the Bardenas and Moncayo. Another viewpoint in the municipality is on former threshing floors, where grain used to be threshed. At 825 metres, Pico del Fragal is the geodetic summit between Orés, El Frago and Luna.
Two trails with different descriptions are worth considering for a hike: the PR-Z101 hiking trail runs from Asín through Orés and over El Fragal to El Frago. Check the trail signs locally. The “Orés – El jardín de los dioses” route is an ethnobotanical hiking trail that combines nature with Greek mythology. It runs through the Río Ores valley, past riverside woodland, aromatic plants and wild orchids. Orés also has routes for cycling and paths for walking. When planning, you can choose between a named trail route and one themed around plant life and mythology.
Church Art and Architectural History
The Church of San Juan Bautista was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style and rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The church houses the Gothic Hispano-Flemish altarpiece of the Virgen del Rosario. It also preserves the 12th-century Romanesque carved figure of the Virgen de la Pardina. The figure was transferred from the hermitage of the same name and restored in 1981. It depicts the Virgin and Child in a seated Sedes Sapientiae composition. The altarpiece associated with the Virgen de la Pardina is a significant work from the second quarter of the 15th century and belongs to the International Gothic style. The portrait figure of the Virgen de Yérzol is also preserved in the church.
Remains of a Roman road lie beside the Ermita de la Virgen de la Pardina. The Torre de Siera, also known as Castillo de Siera, is in Val de Siera, within the municipality of Orés, near the town and on private land. Though substantially altered, the building retains a stately character. Stone buildings are a defining feature of the town centre. Together, these buildings and artworks offer different points of interest for a visit, from the Romanesque church and its later alterations to individual altarpieces and portrait figures.
Traditions and Dates
The revived Subida del Mayo tradition involves cutting down the town’s tallest poplar and putting it up in a square. The May pilgrimage to the Ermita de la Virgen de Yérzol includes the distribution of blessed bread and a tasting of homemade pastries and wine. The exact date can vary from year to year; check it if you’re planning your trip around the event.
The Orés Mágico magic festival has been held every June for more than a decade. The streets of Orés become a stage for magicians of national and international renown. If you’d like to plan your stay around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year. This will help you distinguish the recurring June event from the May pilgrimage, whose date varies.
Getting There
The road to Orés branches off the A-1204 at the Asín-Orés junction onto the CV-813. Check the route before you travel. You can then decide whether hiking trails, scenery, church art or a particular event should be the focus of your stay.
