Épila offers several starting points for planning your trip: historic buildings in the town, a distinctive church interior and the PR-Z 35 circular trail through the wooded landscapes of the Sierra de Monegré. If you are looking for a hotel in Épila, you can plan your stay around whether you want to focus on architectural history, religious art, or nature and outdoor activities.

Architectural history at the palace and church

The Palacio del Conde de Aranda, together with the adjoining Convento de la Concepción, forms one of the most significant 15th-century ensembles in Aragón. Architectural features inside the palace include several polychrome wooden ceilings with simple corbels. The coats of arms of the House of Aranda are the most prominent decorative elements. The ensemble thus combines a distinctive historical context with specific design details.

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa María offers a different period and architectural style. The church was built in the 18th century, following Baroque and Neoclassical models. Its vault paintings depict six Marian litanies attributed to Fray Manuel Bayeu: Regina Patriarcarum, Regina Apostolorum, Regina Prophetarum, Regina Martirum, Regina Confesorum and Regina Virginum. The significant organ is also part of the interior; it was restored in recent decades. Compared with the 15th-century ensemble, Santa María therefore represents a later period of construction and a distinctive combination of architecture and interior art.

Another historic landmark is the Convento de la Inmaculada Concepción in Épila. The Counts of Aranda commissioned it in 1621. The Muralla de Épila can be understood through its visible remains, which include a wall tower at the beginning of Calle Entremuros and a short section of wall. Together, these places differ in their function and appearance, ranging from palace and convent to church and the surviving parts of the town wall.

PR-Z 35: circular trail through wooded landscapes

The PR-Z 35: Sendero de Monegré (Rodanas) is an officially catalogued and inventoried circular trail in the Senderos Turísticos de Aragón network. It leads through the wooded landscapes on the shaded side of the Sierra de Monegré. Pine trees, holm oaks, junipers and savins characterise the dense woodland, which provides refuge for a diverse range of wildlife. The trail’s landscape is therefore defined not only by its trees but also by their importance as a habitat.

The paths are considered easy to navigate and suitable for mountain bikers. This offers practical guidance for planning: cyclists will find an explicitly stated indication that the route is suitable for them; those mainly interested in the landscape can focus on the described forests and vegetation. The circular trail and Épila’s buildings therefore appeal to different interests without requiring the same kind of itinerary.

Rodanas and the pilgrimage tradition

Pilgrimages to the Santuario de Rodanas take place every year from several nearby towns, including Épila. The route described for getting there uses exit 271 of the A-2, followed by the A-121. Then follow the signposted turnoff to Rodanas; from there, it is another six kilometres. Check the road conditions before setting out. The Épila Municipal Tourist Office is located on Calle del Bajo Palacio.

Match your travel interests to your hotel choice

A simple comparison can help with planning: Épila’s buildings represent different periods and forms of cultural heritage, while the PR-Z 35 is a circular trail through a wooded landscape that is also described as suitable for mountain biking. The Santuario de Rodanas adds an annual pilgrimage tradition to the mix. You can therefore choose a hotel based on what interests you most during your stay.
