In Bijuesca, historic buildings and trails along the Manubles offer concrete starting points for your trip. The castle, churches and bridge provide different ways to explore the town’s history, while the Pozo de los Chorros and nearby trails add landscape and activity to the experience. Depending on whether you are more interested in architecture, religious traditions or a particular route, you can shape your stay around different themes.

Castillo de Bijuesca and Border History

Castillo de Bijuesca is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. It consists of three structures arranged at different levels on a rocky outcrop. Its border location with Castile made the castle a strategically important frontier fortress. This brings together two aspects: the castle’s layout follows the contours of the rocky outcrop, while its position on the border explains its strategic significance. Its protected status as a Monument adds to its architectural and historical context.

Ermita and Iglesia de San Miguel

The Ermita de la Virgen del Castillo reuses a medieval tower. The tower is part of the castle complex and predates the rest of the chapel. The specific architectural connection between the castle and the Ermita is therefore the tower, which has been incorporated into the chapel. The Iglesia de San Miguel stands in the lower part of the town; remains of its original Romanesque phase are preserved around the apse. The two religious buildings have different points of interest: for the Ermita, it is the reused tower; for San Miguel, it is the surviving Romanesque trace in the apse. One draws attention to the reuse of an older architectural feature, the other to the remains of an earlier construction phase.

The Romanesque Bridge over the Manubles

The Romanesque bridge in Bijuesca over the Manubles has two arches. It stands over the riverbed beside the A-1502 towards Soria. Unlike the castle, with its structures arranged at different levels, the bridge can be identified by its arches and its relationship to the river. The riverbed and road also provide clear reference points for its location. A route stage from Bijuesca to El Quiñón also crosses this bridge.

Religious Traditions and Their Rhythms

The Saca de la Virgen is a centuries-old tradition in Bijuesca, held every 25 years. An edition was celebrated in June 2023. Each year, the Novena of the Virgen del Castillo takes residents on a pilgrimage to the Ermita. The traditions therefore differ considerably in frequency: one returns every 25 years, the other annually. If you would like to include a future novena in your travel plans, check the date locally again.

Routes to the Pozo de los Chorros and El Quiñón

The Pozo de los Chorros is a scenic waterfall on the Manubles. From the outskirts of Bijuesca, a signposted trail heads towards Berdejo and the Pozo. If trail conditions or maintenance have changed, check the signs locally. One route stage starts in Bijuesca, leaves the town at its southeastern edge and heads southeast towards the bridge over the Manubles, crosses it and continues along a clearly visible trail to the southeast as far as El Quiñón. The routes differ in their starting points, course and destinations: the signposted trail leads from the edge of town to the waterfall; the stage to El Quiñón starts in Bijuesca and crosses the bridge. The direction and destination of each route are therefore important reference points when choosing between them.
