Embid de la Ribera brings together the rugged landscape of the Hoces del Jalón, Stage 4 of the GR 90.2 and several cultural landmarks. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dones, the Parque Escultórico and the festivals offer different points of interest from the hiking route through the gorges. If you’re looking for a hotel in Embid de la Ribera, you can plan your trip around what matters most to you: a particular route, architecture and local history, or a date on the festival calendar.

Gorges and protected areas

Embid is set in the rugged landscape of the Hoces del Jalón, with steep gorges and cliffs. The Hoces are part of the Natura 2000 network and are designated both as a Special Protection Area (ZEPA-ES0000299) and as a Site of Community Importance (LIC-ES2430100). These two protected-area designations are as much a part of the natural landscape as its steep rock formations. Before visiting, check the boundaries and applicable regulations for the areas.

Hiking the GR 90.2

Stage 4 of the GR 90.2 runs from Embid de la Ribera through Paracuellos de la Ribera to Aluenda. It is 9.4 kilometres long, takes about three hours and includes 425 metres of ascent and 105 metres of descent. With considerably more ascent than descent, the elevation profile is a planning consideration in its own right, alongside distance and approximate duration. On this stage, the route crosses the Jalón and climbs to the ruins of the Ermita de San Miguel. From Embid, the GR 90.2 follows a path alongside the railway towards Paracuellos de la Ribera. Check trail conditions before setting out; they may also affect access to the area around the ruins.

Church, sculptures and film history

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Dones was built in the 16th century in the Mudéjar style. It is listed as a “Monumento de Interés Local” (Monument of Local Interest). Its architecture and designation complement each other: the style describes the building’s character, while the classification indicates its local heritage status. A municipal notice from July 2025 locates the Parque Escultórico de Embid de la Ribera on Cerro de San Miguel; the park may continue to expand. The area also has a connection to film history: exterior scenes for the film “Réquiem por un campesino español” were shot in Embid de la Ribera.

Pilgrimage and festivals throughout the year

Two different time windows matter when planning your trip. In the second week of May, a pilgrimage to Viver de la Sierra is held in honour of the Archangel Michael. Festivals in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Dones take place on the first weekend in August and last about four days. The programme includes Vaquillas, an orchestra, a Guiñote competition and a fancy-dress competition. Check the specific event dates before travelling; future dates and programmes may vary.
