Alagón combines architectural history with lively religious and culinary traditions. When planning your stay, you can use specific places and festival dates as a guide: these include the Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol, Semana Santa and recurring celebrations throughout the year. For individual activities and visits, it is advisable to confirm access or dates before your trip.

Mudéjar Architecture and Local History

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol in Alagón is part of the Cinco Villas Mudéjar Route. Its tower features the type of Almohad minaret characteristic of Aragonese Mudéjar towers. The church’s inclusion on the route places it within a broader art-historical context; the tower type identifies a specific feature of the building.

The former Colegio de San Ignacio also preserves a remarkable detail: the stairwell vault contains a medallion bearing the monogram of the Society of Jesus. Opinions differ on its attribution. Some experts attribute the medallion to Francisco de Goya, while others attribute it to Francisco Bayeu. The former Jesuit college was built in the 18th century. It is therefore important to distinguish between the visible motif and its disputed authorship when interpreting the medallion.

The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Hispano-Mexicano is a place of interest in Alagón. It is located in the basement of the former Jesuit college, at Plaza de San Antonio 2. Confirm access before your arrival. Alaun represents a different historical period: the ancient Iberian settlement was located around what is now Plaza del Castillo. Alaun minted its own coins with inscriptions in an alphabet.

Semana Santa and the Festival Calendar

Semana Santa in Alagón has historical roots dating back to the 13th century. In July 2023, it was declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Aragón. Around 2,000 members belong to four brotherhoods. The processions connect the churches of San Pedro, Virgen del Castillo and San Juan; the local tradition also includes the “Paso de la Muerte.” Semana Santa therefore offers several specific points of interest if you are interested in religious customs, processions or the history of the participating churches.

Other patron-saint festivals also have fixed dates: the celebration in honor of San Antonio de Padua falls on June 13, and the one in honor of the Virgen del Castillo on September 8. Jueves Lardero is an annual culinary tradition whose date depends on the Easter calendar. It includes a tortilla with chorizo and longaniza. Alagón’s bakeries bake a special bread for the festival, available only on this occasion.

The Hogueras de San Antón are celebrated every year at the Recinto Ferial de Alagón, where bonfires are lit. If you would like to include the celebration in your travel plans, check the dates in advance.

Recreation Area and Camino del Ebro

El Caracol is a recreation area at the natural mouth of the Jalón where it meets the Canal Imperial de Aragón, and it can be explored by bicycle. As conditions may vary seasonally, it is advisable to check them before an outing. This is especially useful if you plan to make El Caracol a fixed part of your stay.

On leaving Alagón, the Camino del Ebro passes beneath the AP-68 motorway and then continues along the road to Cabañas de Ebro. As the route may change, check current trail conditions before your trip. This section can be distinguished from visits to the churches, museum and local historical sites: here, the focus is on the specific route leading out of Alagón.

Planning Visits

The Oficina de Turismo de Alagón offers guided tours of the municipality, museum visits, historical-artistic tours and tourist leaflets. As the services on offer may change, ask in advance about current availability if you are interested. Together with the fixed patron-saint festival dates and celebrations timed according to the Easter calendar, this can help you plan your trip around the aspects of Alagón that interest you most.
