Borja combines a protected historic ensemble with museums, wine experiences and trails. The town’s architecture and collections take centre stage, while nearby attractions add to the itinerary. If you’re looking for a hotel in Borja, you can tailor your search to the themes that matter most for your trip.

Historic Ensemble and Architecture

Borja’s historic ensemble is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC), or Asset of Cultural Interest. It includes military, religious and civil architecture: its landmarks include castle ruins and surviving town gates, the former collegiate church of Santa María, numerous monasteries, the town hall and Renaissance townhouses. The medieval centre lies on the slopes of a raised hill, with the remains of the castle at its summit.

The Casa de las Conchas is a striking example of the town’s architectural history. It was built between the late 15th and early 16th centuries, with work completed in 1524. It takes its name from the shell-shaped wrought-iron nails adorning the main door. A loggia, currently bricked up, has eight semicircular arches. Plaster ornaments and interlaced patterns reflect the Mudéjar tradition. A later phase of construction can be traced at the Antigua Colegiata de Santa María: after the fire of 1775, it was completely rebuilt in the Baroque period in the French Neoclassical style of the Pilar school.

Museums and Cultural Heritage

The Museo de Santa Clara presents more than a hundred significant works of art from the convent in seven galleries. It conveys the Franciscan-Clare spirituality practised there over more than four centuries. The Museo de la Colegiata de Santa María focuses on the artistic heritage of the former collegiate church. Almost all the works come from the church; pieces were also deposited in the museum after four religious orders in Borja were dissolved. The museum also serves as a tourist information centre.

The Museo Arqueológico de Borja is housed in the former parish church of San Miguel, whose fabric includes Romanesque, Mudéjar and Baroque elements. The museum explores the Celtiberian culture of the Second Iron Age, featuring the city of Bursau and archaeological finds from Bursau and other sites. Borja’s architectural history, religious art and archaeological evidence thus complement one another, without being confined to a single period.

If you’d like to learn more about the cultural heritage, the Borja Tourist Office offers guided tours that explain and highlight it. Bodegas Borsao in Borja specialises in Garnacha. Winery tours and a wine-tasting course are available by prior reservation, so be sure to plan ahead.

Trails and Excursions

The Camino de Santiago Castellano-Aragonés passes through Borja and forms part of the 237-kilometre route from Gallur to Santo Domingo de Silos. Another route is hiking trail PR-Z 168, which runs from Borja to the Balcón de El Buste nature viewpoint. The marked trail network of the Campo de Borja district also includes ten routes, totalling almost 300 kilometres for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. These figures refer to the district’s trail network; they do not mean that every route starts or ends in Borja. Before setting out on a hike, it’s worth checking the trail’s current condition.

Places to Visit near Borja

Near Borja lies La Estanca de Borja, an artificial pond covering about 14 hectares. Built in 1328 for agricultural irrigation, it is a stopover and nesting site for numerous birds. From Borja, you can reach the pond on foot via the PR trail or drive there on the road from Borja to Mallén. As road and trail conditions can change, it’s a good idea to check them before setting out.

The Santuario de Misericordia is also nearby. A visit includes the chapel, the interpretation centre, the Ecce Homo painting and the Caserón, which also serves traditional Aragonese cuisine. When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance Borja’s buildings and museums with a trail or a nearby excursion. Then search for hotels in Borja to suit your planned stay and the options available for your travel dates.
