Alforque brings together the Ebro landscape and traces of how it has been used throughout history. Meanders, orchards, and river islands shape the view from the lookout point; a hydraulic complex, the former Paso de la Barca, and the Iglesia de San Pedro provide further points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel, this mix offers a useful starting point: decide whether you want to focus your stay primarily on the river landscape, engineering heritage, or local traditions.

The Ebro Landscape and Nature

The Alforque lookout point is located at a former landing place. From there, the view takes in the Ebro’s winding meanders, orchards, and river islands. A centuries-old pine of impressive size also stands on the banks of the Ebro near Alforque. Along the river, you will encounter both a landscape shaped by several distinctive features and a single striking natural landmark.

Part of the municipality of Alforque is designated as a protected area within the Natura 2000 network because of its diverse river habitats. The designation takes into account the area’s proximity to Los Monegros, La Retuerta, and the Saladas de Sástago, as well as the meanders of the Ebro. The protected status applies to part of the municipality of Alforque.

Waterworks and the Former River Crossing

The hydraulic complex of Alforque comprises a weir, the shaft of a waterwheel used to irrigate the municipality’s 110 hectares of farmland, and a grain mill powered by a regolfo system. Some time ago, residents of Alforque installed a motorized pump to replace the waterwheel’s function. The components point to irrigation and grain milling; the waterwheel’s replacement marks a change in irrigation technology.

The complex is about 300 meters from the village. Reach it by following the path upstream below the church and town hall.

The former Paso de la Barca is marked by surviving structures on both banks of the Ebro: the ferryman’s house stands on the left bank, while a post for the cable system is on the right; there is also a shelter for travelers. On the left bank, the path leading to the river, which branches off from the path below the church, leads to the former crossing. On the right bank, the Cinco Olivas–La Zaida road leads there. The directions are therefore clearly associated with their respective banks.

Church, Olive Oil, and Local Traditions

The Iglesia de San Pedro in Alforque is Gothic in style. Its voussoirs bear inscriptions marking three times the Ebro froze over: 1658, 1694, and 1891. The church thus combines Gothic architecture with specific events in the river’s history.

The Casa de Gros, also known as Casa Tomé, was established in 1886 by a wealthy family that produced olive oil. The house retains basins made of porcelain tiles that were formerly used to produce pure olive oil. While the church is associated with its architecture and the inscriptions about the river freezing over, these basins offer a glimpse into the area’s former olive oil production.

The Hoguera de San Fabián y San Sebastián takes place on January 20. In times of drought, the Pilón de Santa Bárbara is associated with a procession and a prayer of supplication. The two traditions differ in their timing: the Hoguera takes place on January 20, while the procession takes place during times of drought.

Route and Activities on the Ebro

Stage 14 of the Ebro Route in the Province of Zaragoza runs from Velilla to Cinco Olivas through Alforque, highlighting the Parque de la Barca there. Fishing is also possible on the Ebro near Alforque. These offer two different ways to experience the river: the route linking the named places and fishing as an activity on the Ebro.
