Aniñón lies at the foot of the Sierra de la Virgen, facing the Sierra de Armantes. In the town, a late Gothic church and a former mill offer glimpses into different chapters of history, alongside traditional festival dates and several routes. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Aniñón, these highlights can help shape your plans: architecture, olive oil production, the festival calendar or exploring named trails each offer a different way to discover the town.

Church and Building History

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Castillo is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The late Gothic church dates from the 16th century. Its single-nave layout comprises four bays, chapels between the buttresses and a pentagonal apse. The bays divide the church interior into sections; the chapels are positioned along the sides between the buttresses, while the apse closes off the space. This makes it possible to understand the architecture not only through its period, but also through its clearly named structural elements.

The tower is older than the church and probably dates from the 14th century. Its lower section has a minaret-like structure. The church and tower therefore have different dates; when looking at the building, it is worth considering these two parts separately and retaining the probable dating of the tower.

Olive Oil, the Mill and Festival Dates

The Museo del Aceite is housed in a former mill dating from 1934, which remained in operation until 1987. In the original mill, visitors can learn about the olive oil production process. The museum thus connects the former production site with an insight into how the oil is made. A 2025 guide mentions guided tours. If you are planning a tour, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Olive oil tasting at the “Santísimo Misterio” Cooperative is also possible in Aniñón. Check the current arrangements in advance. This lets you explore the subject of olive oil both through the mill’s history and through the product itself.

The festival calendar provides two further dates to plan around: the traditional Romería del Niño Jesús is celebrated on the second Saturday in May. The patron saint festivities in honour of the Santísimo Misterio take place on the third Sunday in September. The dates therefore fall in different seasons. If you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check that year’s programme.

Landscape and Routes

The location at the foot of the Sierra de la Virgen, facing the Sierra de Armantes, gives the surrounding area two distinct geographical landmarks. A hiking route from Aniñón climbs to the Pantano del Niño Jesús reservoir. It follows paths between abandoned orchards and mountain trails, and crosses the Barranco del Acuadron ravine. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Another route leads from Aniñón to Bijuesca and forms part of the historic Camino de Santiago. It runs through Cervera de la Cañada and Villarroya de la Sierra on its way to Bijuesca. The routes therefore offer different emphases: one passes named landscape features, while the other is part of the historic pilgrimage route.

Practical Information

The Parque del arroyo del Fresno in Aniñón has a picnic area. If you are planning to use it, confirm before your visit that the facilities are available. For travel, a 2025 guide lists a bus service from Calatayud to Aniñón operated by Autocares Hermasa. Before setting off, check that the bus is currently running and where exactly it terminates. This will help you coordinate the key parts of your plans—travel, visiting arrangements and your choice between cultural and route-based activities—with your stay.
