Yebra De Basa brings together devotion to Santa Orosia, churches, hermitages and trails on Monte Oturia. If you are looking for a hotel in Yebra de Basa, the reason for your trip can help shape your plans: are the Romerías your main interest, a hike to the hermitages or a longer trek? The information below can help you make sense of dates and routes and tailor your stay to your specific interests.

Romerías, Santa Orosia and local culture

The parish church of San Lorenzo keeps the relic of Santa Orosia’s head in a cabinet in its main altar. The Romería de Santa Orosia takes place on June 25: the procession travels on foot from Yebra de Basa to the sanctuary at the Puerto. It includes several stops at chapels and ritual acts. After Mass at the Ermita del Puerto, the relic is venerated publicly. For planning a stay around the annual Romería, June 25 is a specific point of reference.

Another procession is the Romería de las Escoronillas. It runs from Yebra de Basa along the Camino de las ermitas to the Iglesia de las Cuevas; villages in the Ballibasa take part with their processional crosses. The Dance of Santa Orosia features the chiflo and salterio, with the salterio also known as a string drum. The Centro de Interpretación de Santa Orosia explores the traditional legend and its significance for Yebra de Basa and the surrounding villages. The people of Yebra de Basa welcome pilgrims with honorary wine and torta.

Mountain architecture in Yebra de Basa

Typical mountain architecture includes stone façades, steeply pitched roofs, funnel-shaped chimneys and espantabrujas (witch-repelling ornaments). An individual structure can also be identified by its dimensions: the Pozo Nevero in Yebra is circular, 5.30 metres in diameter and 8 metres deep. Together, these features show a different side of the village from its processions and religious traditions.

Hiking and cycling routes on Monte Oturia

The Ruta de las ermitas

The Ruta de las ermitas begins on a path to the left before the entrance to Yebra de Basa and leads to the summit of Monte Oturia. Eight hermitages lie along the route, four of them built directly into the rock. The path reveals the geology of the Monte Oturia conglomerate and passes through vegetation including pastures, artos, junipers, oaks and birches. From the Ermita de O Zoque, you can see the parish church of Yebra and the temple at the Puerto. Griffon vultures, bearded vultures and golden eagles may be visible in the sky; sightings are not guaranteed.
