Abiego can be explored through its buildings, art set in the landscape, and routes with different focuses. The collegiate church, convent, traditional houses and public fountain offer tangible architectural points of interest. The Monumento al Siglo XX incorporates its surroundings into an artistic landscape. Depending on the route, the focus may be on ways of getting around, landscape views or destinations by the river. These differences can help you decide what to focus on during your stay and then look for a hotel for your trip to Abiego.

Churches, Houses and Architectural History

The Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor stands at the highest point in Abiego. It is a 16th-century church in the Late Aragonese rural Gothic style. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; among contemporary churches in the Somontano, it is the only one with this layout. The site’s history goes back further: during the Reconquista, it developed from an Arab mosque and castle into a Christian fortress.

The Convento de San Joaquín is an 18th-century Baroque building. It stands on the hill known as Tozal de las Forcas. Together with the collegiate church, it offers a second reference point for Abiego’s architectural history, with a different period and style.

The traditional houses of the Somontano in Abiego also reveal specific construction details. Their walls are made of brick, clay and rammed earth, and rest on sturdy stone bases. Some façades feature well-preserved coats of arms and epigraphic inscriptions. Different aspects come together here: the construction of the walls and the details on the façades. At the Fuente pública de Abiego, the water spouts are decorated with mask-like figures. This design adds a distinct touch alongside the features of the houses and religious buildings.

Art and Landscape

The Monumento al Siglo XX is located about one kilometre from the town centre and consists of 20 granite steles by the artist Ulrich Rükriem. Its artistic landscape incorporates the surrounding mountains, native woodland, cultivated land and settlement. The surroundings are therefore part of the artistic statement, not merely a backdrop for the steles.

A different timescale is represented by the palaeontological site of La Fondota, where more than 1,000 fossilised mammal tracks have been found. They date from 35 to 40 million years ago. At that time, Abiego had a muddy area and a lake where animals came to drink.

Routes and Nature by the River

The Ruta de la Cabañera can be travelled on foot or by mountain bike, except for the climb to Sevil. By contrast, the circular Ruta Vuelta a Abiego focuses on scenery and views: it passes through holm oak woods and olive and almond groves, with panoramic views of Guara and the Isuala and Alcanadre valleys. The information about the two routes addresses different planning questions: one is about ways of getting around and an exception, while the other is about the route through the landscape and the views.

The Abiego–Puente de Famiñosa–Ajuntadero del Formiga route leads to the medieval bridge of Famiñosa and the confluence of the Formiga and Alcanadre rivers. It connects two named destinations: a structure and a geographical point. The section of the Río Alcanadre near Abiego also has a fishing area with abundant brown trout, in surroundings of pools and bozos. The area around Abiego is also considered attractive for birdwatching.

At the boundary of Abiego’s municipal area are two bridge abutments that may be Roman. Downstream are a weir and another bridge, which may also have Roman origins. This cautious historical classification distinguishes these structures from the medieval bridge of Famiñosa, which lies on the named route.
