Serradúy: Romanesque Bridge and Old Streets
Accommodation in Serradúy
Serradúy lies below the Sierra de Sis, on a rocky outcrop beside the Isábena, where the river narrows slightly. This brings together two different descriptions of its location: the outcrop describes its position in the terrain, while the narrowing describes the course of the Isábena. The Sierra de Sis provides the elevation reference, and the Isábena its riverside setting. For cultural heritage, the Puente de Serraduy at the entrance to the village, the old streets, and several chapels offer further concrete points of reference.
The Romanesque Puente de Serraduy
The Puente de Serraduy is a Romanesque stone bridge at the entrance to the village. It stands across the rocky, narrow riverbed of the Isábena and has two round arches. There is also a relief opening in the abutment on the left bank. This opening is distinct from the two round arches: it is set into the abutment and is a separate architectural detail. The rocky location and Romanesque design connect the landscape setting with a clearly described structure. An abutment is the side part of a bridge that supports it at the riverbank and connects the arch to the surrounding terrain.
Streets and chapels
Serraduy’s narrow, cobbled streets connect the old church of San Martín. This is a different scale of cultural heritage from the individual bridge: here, the form of the streetscape stands out, shaped by its narrowness, cobblestones, and connection to the church. You can thus distinguish two aspects of the historic village: a Romanesque stone structure at the entrance and the streets linking to the old church.
The Romanesque chapel of La Vileta is part of Serraduy’s cultural heritage. The Ermita de la Feixa differs in its location below a limestone cliff in the Sierra de Sis, near La Vileta de Serraduy. It can be reached from there via a track about two kilometres long. At La Vileta, the Romanesque chapel itself is the focus; at the Ermita, the cliff and the approximate length of the track provide concrete points of reference. This gives you different spatial reference points for the two chapels.
Routes and location references
The Capilla de San Lorenzo lies along the continuation of the path across the bridge on the right bank of the Isábena. The A-1605 provides a different reference point: it runs beside the Puente de Serraduy and gives access to Serraduy, La Vileta, and Riguala. Two different ways of orienting yourself are therefore presented here: the chapel’s position along the path on the right bank of the river and the road that provides access to the three places. These are concrete relationships between buildings, the river, and the road that help locate Serraduy, not interchangeable descriptions of its location.
