Arto: Church, River Landscape and Serrablo Route
Accommodation in Arto
Arto brings together a historic church, traditional house architecture and the landscape along the Río Gállego. The village lies close to the river on a low rise and offers views of the surrounding area. If you choose a destination based on its local themes, you will find several points of interest here: the Iglesia de San Martín, the Serrablo church route and the architectural features of Casa Lafragüeta.
Getting there via Huesca
From Huesca, you can reach Arto via Puerto de Monrepós. At Hostal de Ipiés, turn west towards Orna de Gállego; after just under two kilometres, you will reach the village. When planning your journey, it is useful to distinguish between the approach from Huesca and the short final stretch: the pass, turn-off and road to the village form successive landmarks.
The Iglesia de San Martín
The Iglesia de San Martín in Arto is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It was originally built as a church in the late 11th century. The original structure comprised a rectangular nave and a semicircular apse. The nave forms the rectangular section, while the apse forms the rounded end; both details describe the church’s floor plan. Two wall arcades remain on the exterior of the apse, and the central one has an opening. Those interested in architectural history can connect the building’s historical classification with specific architectural details. Its protected status, date of origin and surviving exterior features offer different ways to explore the building.
River landscape and the Serrablo church route
Arto lies close to the Río Gállego on a low rise above the river, offering views of the surrounding area. This description of the landscape thus captures two perspectives at once: proximity to the river and an elevated view of the countryside. The Serrablo church route also uses the Río Gállego as a reference point. Within the Serrablo church route, the Iglesia de San Martín is a stop on Ruta 1: Serrablo Meridional. The Ruta de las iglesias de Serrablo follows the banks of the Río Gállego and connects churches and hermitages. The distinction may help you choose according to your interests: San Martín is the individual church associated with Arto, while the route treats churches and hermitages as a connected theme.
House architecture and feast day
Casa Lafragüeta broadens the focus from church architecture to domestic architecture. The house has doors with wedge-shaped voussoirs and roofs with large, truncated-cone-shaped chimneys. Voussoirs are wedge-shaped masonry blocks; at Casa Lafragüeta, they are found around the doors. Chimneys of this shape are widespread throughout the Pyrenees. This makes it possible to distinguish a feature of an individual house from a chimney style found throughout the region. September 23 is a feast day in Arto.
