Montmesa combines nature watching with architectural and cultural history. When looking for a hotel in Montmesa, these themes can offer different reasons to visit: the birdlife at the Alberca de Alboré, a hike, or the churches and local festival traditions. The time of year you choose can matter for nature watching.

Birdwatching at the Alberca de Alboré

The Centro de la Naturaleza Alberca de Alboré offers environmental guided tours in the wetlands and scheduled crane-watching sessions. The program is seasonal. If you have a particular sighting in mind, check the dates in advance.

The Ruta ornitológica de La Sotonera is the main route on this birdwatching trail. It includes strategic stops for birdwatching and suggests a drive around the reservoir starting in Montmesa. This gives you a guide for a car trip; the stops are for observing birds.

Numerous waders rest on the shores of La Sotonera during migration periods. In spring, large herons and little reed warblers breed in the dense vegetation at the far end of the reservoir. Raptors such as harriers and kites are also observed there. Up to 40,000 birds rest at the Alberca de Alboré in February and March.

Hiking and seasonal planning

The Ruta Verde leads from Montmesa to the Alberca de Alboré. It is listed as a 3.7-kilometer hike with a walking time of about 55 minutes. This gives you both a specific route length and an approximate walking time for planning your day. The Ruta Verde is the second stage of the La Sotonera birdwatching route and passes through reeds, willows, and tamarisk vegetation.

The Marcha Cicloturista BTT Las Grullas “Alberca de Alboré” combines a cycling route in the Montmesa area with the observation of crane migration. For the 2026 edition, a 50-kilometer main route and a 14.5-kilometer family route starting in Montmesa were planned. These distances refer to the 2026 edition; check the details for the relevant edition if you plan to take part later.

Churches and local traditions

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel has been listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest of Aragonese Cultural Heritage since July 1, 2002. Its origins date back to the Romanesque period; in the 18th century, it was transformed into a predominantly Baroque building. The church thus combines Romanesque origins with its later Baroque character.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Turrullón is a simple masonry building with ashlar cornerstones. Its three-bay nave is divided by pointed arches. This description highlights different features from those of the Iglesia de San Miguel: the masonry, ashlar cornerstones, and division of the nave define the impression made by the ermita.

Montmesa’s main festival in honor of Saint Michael is celebrated on September 29. An oral account recorded in 2014 describes the local celebration of the Virgen del Turrullón on the second day of the festival; the following day, people go up to the Virgen. These details offer insight into local religious tradition, without equating the celebration with the main festival.
