Cultural Heritage and Rock Art

The Cueva de Barfaluy I, II, III and IV caves are classified as BIC monuments and are part of the World Heritage property. The Lecina Superior rock overhang lies on the cliffs on the right bank of the Río Vero, in an area known as Fajana de Pera. It contains schematic rock art in red, black and white from the Neolithic and Metal Ages, dating from 5000 to 1500 BC. Lecina thus brings together two distinct cultural points of interest: the caves’ monument and World Heritage classifications, and the overhang’s location and prehistoric rock art.

The footpath to Lecina Superior starts in Lecina and takes about an hour. This is an approximate guide; check trail conditions before setting out. Your planning therefore has both a starting point and an indication of the time involved. The dating of the rock art spans two periods and a long timeframe: it ranges from the Neolithic to the Metal Ages. The colors and dating offer different perspectives on the art at the overhang.

Information Centre and Church Architecture

The Centro de Iniciativas Antonio Peñart is located in the former school on Lecina’s square. The building was converted into a small information centre with panels and a documentary film. It operates seasonally; check opening hours before your visit. This allows you to include the site in your plans while keeping its seasonal opening schedule in mind.

San MartĂn de Lecina is a simple building with a single rectangular nave, a barrel vault and a flat east-facing apse. A nave is the main space of a church; a barrel vault forms a lengthwise arch. The apse completes the description with a clear eastward orientation. At San MartĂn, the focus is therefore on the floor plan, vault and orientation. This architectural perspective on the church differs from the view of the rock art, whose colors and prehistoric dating are key features.

A Natural Landmark with Its Own Date

The Carrasca de Lecina also adds a natural highlight: it was voted European Tree of the Year 2021. This award year has a different significance from the dating of the rock art, between 5000 and 1500 BC. Lecina’s highlights thus bring together a dated award and a cultural-historical period reaching far back in time.
