Las Almunias: Architecture, Starry Skies and a Circular Route
Accommodation in Las Almunias
Las Almunias offers several points of interest for a stay: a landscape bearing traces of earlier land use, buildings dating from several centuries, and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing the village’s enduring features from a seasonal event and the different types of routes. This lets you focus on culture, stargazing or exploring the terrain.
Landscape Between the Settlement and the River
Former fields and orchards lie between the settlement and the banks of the Alcandre River. They form the space between the village and the riverbank and point to earlier agricultural use. Las Almunias can therefore be viewed not only through its buildings, but also through the landscape surrounding the settlement. For travelers interested in how a place relates to its surroundings, this connection offers another distinct aspect of a stay.
Buildings with Distinctive Features
The parish church of Las Almunias is dedicated to Santa María Obispo and dates from the 17th century. Casa Cáncer has a coat of arms and a portal with voussoirs. Its keystone bears the inscription “DOMINGO BIBAN AÑO 1761.” Voussoirs are the wedge-shaped elements of an arch; the keystone sits at the top, in the center. The portal can therefore be viewed both in terms of its architectural form and its carved inscription. The parish church is identified by its dedication and century, while the inscription at Casa Cáncer gives a specific year.
The Ermita de la Trinidad complements these buildings with a different character: it is a simple, vernacular building from the 18th century. Las Almunias thus has a church with a historic dedication, a portal with a coat of arms and inscription, and a simple vernacular building. These differences offer a tangible way to explore the village’s architecture without reducing all the buildings to the same feature.
Summer Stargazing
Every summer, the Agrupación Astronómica de Huesca organizes a night-sky observation event in Las Almunias de Rodellar. The program includes observing with the naked eye and through telescopes, as well as observing the Moon. The event therefore combines several ways of looking at the night sky and can be a distinct focus for a summer stay. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event date before making plans.
Circular Route and Gorge Descent
Crestas del Balced is a circular route for hiking and cycling that starts in Las Almunias de Rodellar. The marked trailhead is on the left-hand side of the road toward Bierge, about 200 meters from Las Almunias. The direction and approximate distance help you find the trailhead; the distance is an estimate. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking them before setting out.
Descending through La Peonera Gorge is a different kind of activity. There is a starting point for this in the area around Las Almunias. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you are looking for a circular route for hiking or cycling, or considering a gorge descent: the two activities are different in nature and do not start at the same described point.
Cheese from the Surrounding Area
Cheesemaking is another local feature: Quesos de Guara is a family-run food business in Las Almunias. It makes products from its own Casa Escartin estate, which is located in Sierra de Guara Natural Park. Quesos de Guara produces artisanal specialty cheeses from sheep’s and goat’s milk. For travelers interested in regional products, this offers a tangible connection to the village and a production process that uses different types of milk.
