Barbenuta: Village History, Church and Routes
Accommodation in Barbenuta
Barbenuta combines the history of a mountain village with named hiking and cycling routes, as well as a cellar visit at Bodegas Bal Minuta. If you’re looking for a hotel in Barbenuta, the village’s history, landscape, a hike or bike ride, and a wine visit can each offer a different focus for your stay. The parish church of San Martín, the PR-HU 2 and R27 Erata routes, and the cellar visit with tasting provide specific ways to explore these interests.
Village scene between the square and Erata
Barbenuta belongs to the former Bal Minuta valley, which lies at the foot of the peak of Erata. From higher parts of the village, you can see the Sobrarbe and Alto Gállego comarcas. At the edge of the village is the Fuente del Cumo; there is a viewpoint nearby. The village is arranged around a lovely square with a central fountain shaded by a large cherry tree.
Church, architecture and exhibition
The parish church of San Martín de Barbenuta is of Romanesque origin and was extensively remodelled in the 16th century. An old Chrismon has been preserved above the entrance porch. A Chrismon is a Christian monogram; this detail adds a specific feature to the building’s history.
Traditional features of the village include threshing floors, bordas, fountains, springs, chimneys, doorways, windows and coats of arms. These features range from village structures and water sources to details of individual buildings. An exhibition about the former school in the Parlamento de Barbenuta includes maps, wooden desks, photographs and historical documents. Alongside the architectural features, it also presents a collection of historical materials.
Vineyards and cellar visit
The vineyards of Bodegas Bal Minuta are in Barbenuta. The winery offers a regular cellar visit that can be booked as an experience. It includes a video presentation about the winery’s history and project, a guided tour of the cellar, and a tasting of two wines with locally made artisanal appetisers. In the calendar shown for August 2026, regular visits start at 11:30 a.m. and last two hours; available dates can be selected through a calendar. If you’re travelling after August 2026, check the current dates in advance.
Routes for hikers and cyclists
The R27 Erata mountain biking route connects Oros Alto, Barbenuta and Espierre, then follows an 11-kilometre dirt track to the summit of Erata. There is also a cattle grid on the route. Route 27 Erata is rated very difficult; its stated distance is 33.3 kilometres, with 1,250 metres of elevation gain and a duration of four hours and 30 minutes.
The PR-HU 2 hiking trail runs from Orós Bajo through Barbenuta and Espierre to Yésero. Near Barbenuta, it passes through Espierre to the Collada Espierre, where it intersects the GR 15 towards Yésero. The route descriptions offer different points of reference for choosing a route: for the R27, the difficulty, distance, elevation gain and duration are specified; the PR-HU 2 is described in detail through its sequence of places and its connection to the GR 15.
