Trapiche: Church, Mill and Railway History
Accommodation in Trapiche
Trapiche is a rural settlement with an agricultural character, located on the Carretera del Arco. Its history is reflected in the Iglesia de San Isidro, in the sugar and milling industries, and in traces of the disused coastal railway. The area also hosts events celebrating potatoes, and the Vereda de Vélez-Málaga a Riogordo serves as a hiking and nature corridor. This gives you several options when planning your trip: architectural history, local cuisine or outdoor activities.
Church and Mill History
Trapiche grew up around a sugar factory founded around 1724. The Iglesia de San Isidro was built between 1857 and 1860. It has a rectangular nave with a vaulted ceiling. At the entrance is a round-arched doorway, above which is a small niche with a depiction of San Isidro. The church brings together its period of construction, spatial layout and doorway design.
El Trapiche is also known as Molino de San Isidro. Parts of the original building and a distinctive square-section chimney remain at the Trapiche de San Isidro. The mill used the water power of the RĂo VĂ©lez and became the area’s first modern flour mill. It also produced oil. Another industrial landmark is the Chimenea del Ingenio Azucarero de El Trapiche, recorded as an industrial chimney and trapiche dating from the 18th to the 20th century. Its preservation is a designated conservation objective.
Traces of the Coastal Railway
The Apeadero de Trenes de El Trapiche is a 20th-century railway halt in the CaserĂo de El Trapiche. It survives as a former station building on the disused coastal railway that connected the AxarquĂa. The building features eclectic brick architecture with Neo-MudĂ©jar influences. Its preservation is also included as an objective in the municipal architectural inventory. The railway architecture thus adds another facet to the history of the area’s church and industrial buildings.
Events and Regional Cuisine
The Jornada de la Papa Temprana was held for the tenth time in 2026. The program included an exhibitor showcasing typical regional gastronomic products and a tasting of the plato trapicheño. The dish consists of slowly cooked patatas a lo pobre, peppers, onion, a fried egg and chorizo. This gives you a concrete sense of the ingredients and preparation associated with the event.
The 2026 Fiestas de San Isidro program also included a range of activities: a Rociera Mass, traditional paella, children’s games and a procession. If you would like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates and program for the relevant edition in advance.
Hiking and Other Interests
The Vereda de Vélez-Málaga a Riogordo forms part of the historic Andalusian network of drovers’ roads and serves as a corridor for hiking and experiencing the natural surroundings. It includes a fully upgraded 2.2-kilometer section between Vélez-Málaga and Trapiche. A municipal program from 2022 also listed a 15-kilometer night hiking route: from Trapiche to the stupa and Torre de la Atalaya, then back to Trapiche. Before planning a hike, check whether this route is currently available.
Nearby Karman Guen is suitable for meditation retreats and the study of the Dharma. This focus differs from the architectural and transport-related themes in the area and may play a distinct role in your travel plans.
