Almayate Alto is the inland, widely dispersed settlement area of Almayate, arranged around the Ermita Alta. It combines an archaeological site with a medieval tower, a simple chapel and a hilly landscape. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay where the character of the destination also matters, these cultural and landscape features can help you choose. They give Almayate Alto a distinct identity shaped by settlement history, architecture and its natural setting.

A widely dispersed settlement area

Its location is a good place to start: Almayate Alto lies inland and forms the widely dispersed settlement area of Almayate, arranged around the Ermita Alta. The name therefore refers to more than a single building. The archaeological site, the tower and the chapel are specific historical and architectural features associated with this settlement area. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between the area as a whole and its individual built heritage: Almayate Alto is the destination, while each of these remains offers a different perspective on its history and character.

Alquería and Nasrid tower

The Despoblado de Almayate Alto is an archaeological site containing a medieval alquería; above ground, the only visible remains at the site are those of a tower. The Torre de la Alquería de Almayate is badly ruined, but remains clearly identifiable within the archaeological site of the Nasrid alquería. Classified as a defensive and watchtower from the Nasrid period, it is dated to the 13th to 15th centuries. This site brings together two historical layers: the medieval alquería, which provides the archaeological context, and the individual tower, whose function and dating offer a more precise chronological reference.

The chapel’s simple architecture

You will find a different architectural form at the Ermita de la Inmaculada Concepción in Almayate Alto. The simple chapel has a stark entrance, a lean-to roof and a small bell gable. Together, these features create a different architectural impression from the tower, classified as a defensive and watchtower. Here, a religious building stands alongside the remains of the medieval settlement. If you are interested in architecture, you can compare the different functions and forms of these two buildings without reducing Almayate Alto to a single historical period.

Hilly landscape and quarry history

The landscape is also part of the archaeological site’s setting: it lies in hilly terrain with partly steep slopes and substantial erosion. Almayate Alto is also associated with a quarry of calcareous sandstone. Its history includes different periods of use. The earliest known use included a Mozarabic rock-cut church. In the mid-18th century, the quarry was used again to provide stone for the only tower of Málaga Cathedral. The landscape and quarry add two more perspectives to the history of the alquería and the tower: the terrain in which the site lies and the use of the stone extracted there.

Christmas tradition in the wider Almayate area

The wider Almayate area is also home to an annual Christmas tradition. At the end of December, residents stage a live nativity play at the Colegio Público “Juan Paniagua.” Unlike the tower, chapel and quarry, this performance is tied to the Christmas season. It is therefore a seasonal point of interest alongside the historical and landscape features associated with Almayate Alto. When choosing when to travel, you can take into account the difference between an event held annually at the end of December and the area’s lasting architectural and landscape features.
