If you’re looking for a hotel in Mijas, you can choose how to explore the destination based on what you want your stay to focus on: history in the historic centre, insights into local culture and crafts, or the landscapes of the Sierra de Mijas. These different themes offer concrete starting points for planning your trip, without reducing Mijas to a single attraction.

The historic centre and its layers of history

The former settlement core of Mijas was located on the site of today’s Jardines de La Muralla. Documents from 1492 mention a fortress there with a tower and a mosque. The historic centre was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1969. It retains a street plan of Arab origin; its whitewashed streets offer views of the Mediterranean. If you’re interested in the history of the town, you’ll find both traces of its former settlement core and the later protected status of the centre here.

The bullring is also one of the notable historic buildings: it was built in 1900 at the request of a group of residents and set into the rock. Its oval shape is considered one of only a few of its kind in Spain. The year it was built, its creation at the initiative of local residents and its distinctive shape give the bullring its own architectural history, distinct from the development of the streets in the historic centre.

Museums, miniatures and crafts

The Casa Museo opened in June 1995 in the former town hall building. Its exhibits illustrate Mijas in earlier times through farming and fishing equipment, olive presses, a wine cellar, a traditional Mijas kitchen and local crafts. The collection explores different aspects of everyday life in the past, adding a cultural-historical perspective to the town’s architectural history.

At the Carromato de Mijas, many miniatures are displayed using magnifying glasses and optical magnification systems. When the exhibition house opened in 1972, the collection was presented with around 360 miniatures. For visitors who enjoy focusing on small details, this style of display offers a distinctive way to engage with the exhibits.

On the Ruta de los Artesanos, you can discover workshops where craftspeople demonstrate how unique objects are made. This puts craftsmanship centre stage alongside historic collections: you can see how objects are created rather than just viewing finished pieces.

Landscapes, plants and wildlife

The Sierra de Mijas is a limestone mountain range that runs parallel to the coast, forming a natural balcony rich in biodiversity above the Mediterranean. Around Pico Mijas, you may spot kestrels, golden eagles and short-toed snake eagles, among other birds. The Ruta Botánica covers 12,875 square metres and features various native plant species from the province of Málaga, as well as a total of 140 species from every continent. Together, these features offer different ways to explore the landscape, from the mountains’ geological character to the diversity of plants and birds of prey.

Along the network of self-guided walking trails, information panels cover nature, culture and ethnology. As you follow the trails, you’ll encounter not only information about nature but also insights into cultural and ethnological aspects. Which of these perspectives interests you most can help shape your choice of activities in Mijas, without assuming any particular route or walking time.

Places and occasions to help plan your trip

The Ruta Selfie de Mijas features 15 special locations across the municipality, marked with small yellow plaques. In addition, three nighttime spots are highlighted for their illumination after dark and exceptional beauty. If you’d like to include these stops in your plans, check the signs on site.

Local festivities take place in the first half of September, especially on 8 September, in honour of the patron saint, Virgen de la Peña. As exact programme dates may vary, it’s a good idea to check the dates for your planned stay. This lets you plan your trip around a specific cultural occasion.
