La Cala De Mijas: Coastal Path, Heritage and Events

When choosing La Cala De Mijas for a hotel stay, different interests may take priority: a walking and cycling path through the coastal landscape, a historic tower, assisted bathing facilities, or market and event dates. Consider whether outdoor activities, heritage, beach services or a particular event are important to your travel plans. The various facilities and dates can be considered separately.

A Historic Landmark

The Torre de la Batería de Cala del Moral was built in 1773 and is listed as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” (B.I.C.), or Asset of Cultural Interest. Mijas Town Hall restored the tower and adapted it for museum use. Its construction date, heritage status and museum use are therefore distinct aspects of the same building. The Torreón de La Cala Interpretation Centre was temporarily closed on 26 August 2026; this status may change. Check the latest information before visiting.

Senda Litoral and Beach Facilities

At La Cala, the Senda Litoral runs as a walking and cycling path. It passes Mediterranean dunes and coastal sand areas that are home to protected plant and animal species. If you would like to include a walking or cycling route in your plans, this is a specific path with a distinctive natural setting. The Senda Litoral also leads to coastal areas along the Mijas coastline dedicated to leisure and water sports. These areas offer a useful reference point if such activities are among your interests.

Playa La Cala is easy to reach on foot, by car and by bus. At Playa de La Cala–Torreón, assisted bathing is provided under a 156 m² shade canopy staffed by three specialist lifeguards. Sun loungers, a pair of crutches, a hoist and three amphibious chairs are also available: two for adults and one for children. Beach services and their seasonal availability may change; check the latest information before your visit.

Weekly and Monthly Markets

As of 26 August 2026, a market for organic produce is held on the Bulevar de La Cala de Mijas on the second and last Sunday of each month. A street market takes place on Wednesday mornings at the Recinto Ferial, approximately from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The markets therefore differ in type, location and day of the week: the monthly organic produce market is distinct from the Wednesday street market. Market dates and times may change; check the details before visiting.

Festivals and Event Dates

Día del Carmen is traditionally celebrated in La Cala on 16 July with a procession; the specific arrangements may change. Local festivities take place at the end of July, though the timing may change. These are two different dates to bear in mind when planning your time during the month. An event listing from July 2025 for the Feria de La Cala de Mijas mentions concerts, a daytime fair and children’s activities. Programme details may change. If you would like to plan your stay around a festival or event, check the latest dates and programme before making plans.
