Soportújar: Tinaos, Witch Figures, and Village History
Accommodation in Soportújar
Soportújar brings together distinctive architectural features, a themed streetscape, and traditional tales. When choosing a place to stay, you can match these with different interests: architecture and local history, witch-related motifs, views, and a specifically named mountain trail. The attractions vary considerably—from the covered tinaos in the village to the Mirador de Soportújar and the Feria del Embrujo in August.
Tinaos, the Village Center, and Witch Imagery
Traditional Alpujarran tinaos can be found throughout the village. These are covered extensions or passageways—a distinctive architectural feature that you will see in many parts of the streetscape. The village center is arranged around a 16th-century church that was formerly a mosque. The tinaos are spread throughout the village, while the church forms the center of the village core. Together, these architectural landmarks offer a starting point if you want to get to know Soportújar through its architectural history.
The streets are also decorated as a themed attraction centered on witches. The figures include witches, goblins, elves, sorceresses, and dragons. On a corner in the upper part of the village, you can see a replica of Baba Yaga’s house. Alongside the historic architectural features, the streetscape thus presents a fantastical world of imagery. As street installations may be maintained, it is worth checking their current condition before your walk.
Fuente del Dragón and the Mirador
You can reach the Fuente del Dragón from Plaza de Abastos via Calle Estación. According to local lore, its water has aphrodisiac properties and is said to promote fertility; this is part of the local storytelling tradition. The Mirador de Soportújar, by contrast, offers views of the natural surroundings and neighboring villages such as Carataunas and Cáñar. At the mirador’s fountain, statues of an experienced witch and her apprentice stand beside a large cauldron. The attractions therefore have different focal points: at the Fuente, the route and local lore take center stage; at the mirador, it is the views and the figures.
Quiet and an Uphill Trail
The Osel Ling Buddhist meditation center lies at an altitude of 1,600 meters and is dedicated to meditation in seclusion. Participation requirements may vary. If this is of interest to you, check in advance which participation requirements apply to your visit.
A traditional trail leads uphill from the village of Soportújar, passing terraces and small agricultural properties, to the forestry track near the Casa Forestal de Soportújar. The forestry track can be reached in less than an hour. Unlike the tinaos in the streetscape, this trail combines an uphill route through terraces with a specific time frame: less than an hour to the forestry track.
Feria del Embrujo and Typical Dishes
The Feria del Embrujo takes place every year in August in Soportújar. Its program includes activities, music, poetry, theater, and circus. The separately named Noche de las Brujas features performances, queimada, and music. Program events may vary from year to year. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and program in advance. This helps distinguish the annual August date from the details that change each year.
The local cuisine also offers specific points of interest: dishes from Soportújar include puchero de hinojos, plato alpujarreño, migas, fritá de verduras, and gachas. These names add a culinary perspective to the festival programs and street imagery.
