Getting There and the Townscape

The route to Juviles follows the A-4132 from Órgiva to the Portichuelo de Cástaras; from there, continue along the A-4130. Juviles is a linear village laid out along the provincial road and divided into the clearly distinct Barrio Alto and Barrio Bajo neighborhoods. The town center and the area below it are part of the La Alpujarra Historic Site.

Architectural History and Archaeological Traces

In 2007, the Torre e Iglesia de Juviles, the El Fuerte archaeological site, and the Camino Viejo between Juviles and Tímar were designated protected areas. The Iglesia de Juviles is a rural Mudéjar church dating from the mid-16th century; it was expanded in the 18th century. The Ermita de las Ánimas de Juviles is 300 meters from the town center and is the only hermitage in the municipality. The Lavaderos de Juviles are also part of the townscape: they are considered a representative architectural monument of traditional life in the region.

El Fuerte is the ruin of a Mozarabic fortress built in the 8th century. The archaeological site preserves scattered prehistoric and Roman remains, including traces of wall paintings and cisterns. The remains within a possibly fortified enclosure include water basins, wells, and several channels. The site therefore brings together architectural and archaeological traces from different periods.

Historic Routes and Hiking Information

The Camino Viejo between Juviles and Tímar is about 3.5 kilometers long and mostly paved. Historically, it was used by people, livestock, and carts; this use ended after a modern road was built. If you’re planning to walk the route, check current trail conditions beforehand. At about 3.5 kilometers, the Camino Viejo is shorter than the 6.5-kilometer Tramo 4: Nieles-Juviles section, which is listed as taking two hours.

The GR-7 long-distance trail continues toward Juviles. At 2,299 meters above sea level, Pico de Fuente Fría is the highest peak in the municipality. From there, you can reach the peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

Scenery, Festivals, and Cuisine

The Barranco de los Molinos is a scenic gorge with holm oak vegetation, riparian woodland, and scrubland. Alongside the townscape and architectural history, the landscape offers another focus for planning your trip.

Juviles celebrates the Fiestas de San Sebastián on January 20. The Fiestas de la Virgen del Rosario take place in August on no fixed date and include, among other events, a procession. If you’re planning your trip around this festival, check the exact date beforehand. Juviles cuisine is especially known for its air-dried hams.
