Jerez Del Marquesado lies on the Río Alcázar among centuries-old chestnut trees. In addition to the town itself, the municipal area extends into the Sierra Nevada National and Natural Park. Local traditions and regional activities offer several ways to explore the area.

Culture and Festivals in Jerez Del Marquesado

The Fiestas de la Virgen de la Tizná take place every year from September 8 to 12. Individual annual programs may vary, so check the specific events for your travel dates. The Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de Purificación include a traditional floral offering on September 8. When planning, keep in mind both the dates of the Tizná festivities and the specific date of the floral offering.

The town’s cultural heritage shapes its character even outside the festival days. Jerez Del Marquesado is home to a group of Moorish houses; traditional mills are also part of the local heritage. There is also one of the region’s most valuable Mudéjar churches. The houses, mills and church offer different ways to explore the history of the architecture and the town.

Historical Traces and Mining

Another way to look at the past is to visit the Santa Constanza mines, a short distance from Jerez Del Marquesado. They are representative examples of underground mining of vein deposits. Their focus is mining, distinguishing them from the town’s architectural heritage sites.

The Sendero Solidario El Avión (PR-A344) follows the route taken by residents of Jerez Del Marquesado in March 1960 to reach a crashed aircraft. The route thus preserves a specific historical connection. If you plan to walk the trail, check its current condition before setting out.

Mountain Landscapes and Activities

Refugio Postero Alto is a staffed mountain refuge at an elevation of 1,879 meters. Its facilities are suitable for high-mountain activities. Before traveling there, check which services are available. The Área Recreativa de la Tizná has a different character: this recreational area is in the Sierra Nevada, is crossed by two streams and preserves the remains of a hydroelectric plant. The refuge and recreational area thus represent different themes—altitude and high-mountain activities on the one hand, and waterways and traces of hydroelectric power on the other.

Mountaineering, cycling and ski touring are possible on the Ruta del Marquesado. These activities offer a regional perspective on the Sierra Nevada. Ski touring is subject to seasonal conditions. When choosing between these activities, take the time of year into account as well as your interests.

A local dish to try is Rinrán de bacalao, a specialty of Jerez Del Marquesado. It adds a culinary dimension to the cultural and landscape themes.
