The GR-142, a 144-kilometre long-distance trail, passes through Mecina-Fondales. The village layout, adapted to the slope, agricultural terraces and historic buildings also invite you to discover Mecina Fondales through its cultural heritage. When choosing a destination, you can therefore consider whether you would like to focus on hiking trails, the village itself, or both.

Hiking Trails Around Mecina Fondales

The GR-142 is a linear long-distance trail from Lanjarón to Fiñana that passes through Mecina-Fondales. It was officially approved and signposted in 2001. Another option is municipal Route 6, which connects Mecina and Ferreirola via the Escarihuela de Fondales, Cerro Corona and the Escarihuela de Panjuila. Signposted hiking trails also link the three settlements of Mecina, Mecinilla and Fondales.

The information describes routes at different scales: the GR-142 is a 144-kilometre route between two endpoints, while Route 6 connects two places via named intermediate points. The routes in the municipality of La Taha are signposted on the ground; seven downloadable brochures provide additional information. As trail conditions can change and the materials may be updated, check the conditions and that the documents are up to date before setting out.

Village Layout and Protected Cultural Landscape

Mecina’s layout is adapted to the slope. The village is arranged around a communal threshing floor, from which the streets radiate downhill. Tinaos, galleries, passageways and narrow lanes are part of its traditional streetscape. Together, these features describe a settlement structure in which the terrain, central space and street layout are interrelated.

The agricultural land is also part of this spatial context. Area 2 of the protected historic site includes Mecina’s centre and its terraced cultivation zone. The traditionally built settlement areas and agricultural land form an inseparable heritage-protected system in Mecina. The historic area of La Tahá comprises six settlement units, including Mecina-Fondales.

Church, Bridge and Historic Buildings

The church of Mecina-Fondales has a rectangular, single-nave layout, side chapels and a tower adjoining the chancel. Work was carried out on the church in 1536; it may have been a former mosque building consecrated as a church. In 1564, its interior was decorated with glazed ceramic ornaments. Its possible former use remains a historical interpretation, not a certainty.

The structure known as the Puente Romano crosses the Trevélez River and was part of the old royal road to Almería. It probably dates from the Islamic period. The remains of an old flour mill can be seen next to the bridge. Mecina-Fondales is also home to the public washhouse, Lavadero público de Mecina-Fondales.

Water and Cultural Sites

Mecina has a spring with iron-rich water. At the edge of the village, a path leads to the Alberca Grande, a large water reservoir that regulates irrigation schedules and water allocations in this area. The spring and reservoir therefore represent different aspects of water: the spring is distinguished by the composition of its water, while the reservoir serves a function in irrigation.

The former schools of Mecina now house the Centro de Estudios de Sierra Nevada y la Alpujarra (CESNA), a cultural space for meetings, exhibitions and various events. Dates may vary. If you are planning to attend a particular event, check its date in advance.
