Discover Ferreirola
Accommodation in Ferreirola
Ferreirola combines a historic townscape and hiking trails with its own festival tradition. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Ferreirola, the town’s history, specific routes, and your preferred travel dates can each help guide your choice. A hiking trail from Pitres to Ferreirola is 3 kilometers long; the Santa Cruz celebrations take place on the third weekend in August.
Heritage and townscape
Ferreirola is one of the six settlements that make up the historic site of Alpujarra Media Granadina and La Tahá, which has been protected as a cultural heritage site since 2007. This places the village within a larger protected area, while its individual features give a more specific impression of Ferreirola.
The traditional townscape includes a public washhouse, an almost monumental fountain, tinaos, and small squares. This combination includes both individual structures and spaces that contribute to the village’s character.
Ferreirola’s parish church is dedicated to Santa Cruz. Two depictions of the Blessed Souls are venerated in a chapel. These two religious sites reflect different aspects of religious tradition. The remains of an old mill have also been preserved. Thus, the village’s history is represented not only by religious landmarks but also by traces of a former mill site.
The Era del Trance de Ferreirola adds an agricultural connection to these features: it is a threshing floor opposite a gorge.
The Casa-Escuela para Extranjeros in Ferreirola focuses on Spanish, the history and customs of the Andalusian people. Its particular areas of focus are Alpujarra folklore and traditional cuisine.
The Fuente Gaseosa is a spring in Ferreirola whose water contains abundant dissolved gas originating from iron-carbonate-rich rocks. Local residents traditionally drink this water with meals. The spring thus brings together a geological feature and a long-standing connection to food culture.
Hiking trails and routes
For hikers, the medieval trail and the long-distance GR-240 trail pass through Ferreirola. The municipal program “7 pueblos, 7 rutas” adds specifically named sequences of villages to these trail connections. Route 2 goes via Pitres, Mecina, Mecinilla, Fondales, Ferreirola, and Atalbéitar before returning to Pitres; Route 6, by contrast, runs from Mecina via the escarihuela de Fondales, Cerro Corona, and the escarihuela de Panjuila to Ferreirola.
For choosing a route, the practical difference is whether it returns to Pitres or ends in Ferreirola: Route 2 returns to Pitres, while Route 6 ends in Ferreirola. Another specifically measured trail is the hiking route from Pitres to Ferreirola: it is 3 kilometers long. Its final section follows the long-distance GR-142 trail.
