Cortes De Baza: History and Heritage
Accommodation in Cortes De Baza
In Cortes De Baza, buildings, historic remains, and religious traditions shape the town’s cultural identity. The Iglesia de la Anunciación, the remains of Castillo de Abrantes, and the Torre de la Cañada represent different aspects of the town’s history. The surrounding mountainous landscape also draws the eye beyond the town to the Hoya de Baza.
Church, craftsmanship, and local history
The Iglesia de la Anunciación is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). It was built between the 16th and 17th centuries and features a Mudéjar coffered ceiling made of pine wood. The ceiling was crafted by Moriscos from the surrounding area. Its construction period, style, material, and craftsmanship provide several historical points of reference that go beyond simply classifying the church by its age.
The washhouse is also part of the town’s history, but with a different emphasis: it was a meeting place and a place of mutual support for the women of the town. This social role adds the shared everyday life of earlier times to the history of the buildings.
Traces of a defensive system
The remains of Castillo de Abrantes are located near the church. The small Arab fortress was built between the 11th and 12th centuries to house the area’s residents. After it was demolished in the 1980s, walls made of very sturdy rammed earth remained. The material is therefore as much a part of the remains as the fortress’s history.
The Torre de la Cañada is another part of the history of the fortifications. Its floor plan is circular; it has a diameter of 3.64 meters and a height of approximately 7 meters. Along with the castles of Benamaurel, Cortes de Baza, and Castril, the tower formed part of the border-area defensive system. It is relatively close to the municipality’s main town; the Torre de la Cañada can also be seen from the village of Las Cucharetas.
Religious tradition and a route section
The Ermita de los Santos Médicos is located in the center of Cortes de Baza and contains figures of Saints Cosmas and Damian. As part of Semana Santa, a procession runs from the hermitage to the church on Palm Sunday. The dates of Semana Santa vary each year. So if you want to plan your trip around this event, check the calendar for the relevant year.
Another route section is a branch of the Camino Espiritual del Sur. It starts in Campo Cámara, within the municipality of Cortes de Baza, and runs to the old road to Castilléjar. The section is approximately 30 kilometers long. Before setting out, check the route conditions and navigation information as part of your planning. The two points of interest also differ in their timing and practical planning: the procession takes place on a particular day in the annual calendar, while the Camino section is described by its approximate length.
Mountain landscape and regional context
Cortes de Baza is surrounded by mountain ranges and mountainous terrain and lies north of the end of the NegratĂn Reservoir. The Hoya de Baza, where the town is located, contains archaeological evidence of prehistoric, Argaric, Iberian, Phoenician, and Roman cultures. This regional context broadens the perspective on Cortes de Baza: alongside the specific buildings in the town, the Hoya’s long history of settlement forms a distinct context of its own.
This offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: the architecture of the Iglesia de la AnunciaciĂłn, the history of the fortresses and tower, religious traditions, or the mountainous landscape. The topic that interests you most can help guide you in choosing a destination.
