Alfacar brings together cultural history, botanical interests, and hiking opportunities. These include Fuente Grande, historic buildings, the La Alfaguara Arboretum, and trails in the municipality and Sierra de Huétor Natural Park. Pan de Alfacar also adds a local baking tradition to the cultural picture. Depending on what you want to focus on during your trip, history, nature, or outdoor activity can take center stage.

The Spring and Historic Buildings

Fuente Grande, also known as Fuente de las Lágrimas, dates back to the 11th century. Its water was carried to Granada through canals and aqueducts, supplying the Alhambra and the Albaicín. The spring’s history is therefore also connected to a larger historic water supply system that extended as far as Granada.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates from the mid-16th century and stands on the site of an earlier Arab mosque. The remains of baths known as Baños Árabes date from the 13th to 15th centuries, during the Andalusi period. Their floor plan follows the pattern of parallel rooms from the Zirid era. These buildings offer a way to explore the town’s history across different periods.

The Arco de Somera was part of Alfacar’s walled settlement and may have been one of its town gates. This interpretation remains a possibility. The Parque Federico García Lorca offers a different cultural highlight: it was laid out in 1986 with various fountains, paths, and trails. Fragments of Lorca’s poems are displayed on the wall around the main square.

Arboretum and Natural Park

The Sierra de la Alfaguara is part of Sierra de Huétor Natural Park. The La Alfaguara Arboretum originated as a former forest nursery and now serves as an arboretum and botanical educational trail. Pinsapos and several centuries-old cedars grow there; the cedars are more than 35 meters tall. Visitors interested in trees and botanical topics will find a specific focus here, beyond the area’s architectural history.

Sierra de Huétor Natural Park has trenches from the Spanish Civil War that can be visited, including several improved trails of scenic and historic interest. Access conditions may vary. The natural park also has recreational areas set up for camping and outdoor sports. A permit from the natural park is required for climbing at Puerto de Alfacar.

Hiking Trails and Visiting Conditions

The Puerto Alfacar–Alfaguara circular hiking trail is located in the municipality of Alfacar. The route is 7,477 meters long; it takes about two and a half hours and is considered easy. Check the practical trail details before setting out, as trail conditions may change.

The trail to Cueva del Agua is described as an easy route that takes three hours. Access to the cave is closed, so it can only be viewed from the outside. Check access status and trail conditions before visiting. As a guide to the timing, the circular trail takes about two and a half hours, compared with three hours for the trail to the cave; both routes are rated as easy. At Cueva del Agua, viewing the exterior is part of the visit.

Pan de Alfacar

The protected geographical indication Pan de Alfacar covers traditionally made bollos, roscos, roscas, and hogazas. Production combines several ingredients: flour, natural sourdough starter, water from the Fuente Grande aquifer spring, baker’s yeast, and ordinary salt. The natural sourdough starter is fermented in the production area. This baking tradition is a distinct part of a trip through Alfacar, complementing the historical and botanical themes with a regional specialty.
