Explore Hornachuelos via trails of varying lengths, the Sierra landscape and buildings from different periods. If you are planning a stay, these themes can help you decide whether you would rather spend your time hiking, enjoying nature or exploring history.

Hiking trails of varying lengths

The Sendero del Cambuco is a linear route 2.3 kilometres long, with a low difficulty level. It follows the riverbed of the Guadalvacarejo and takes an estimated 30 minutes. By comparison, the Sendero El Águila is 12 kilometres long and takes around five hours. Its difficulty level is moderate. This linear route passes through Mediterranean woodlands, irrigated farmland and along streams. The routes therefore differ in duration, difficulty and the landscapes along the way.

The Bembézar Trail is a 13-kilometre linear route with a low difficulty level and an estimated duration of four hours. It follows the left bank of the Bembézar and ends at the Bembézar Reservoir. Please note that only part of the route is open. Before setting out, check which section is open; trail conditions may change. The stated duration and distance refer to the route as described, not to a claim about which section is open.

The wildlife you may spot also varies. On the Sendero El Águila, you may see golden eagles, Bonelli’s eagles, peregrine falcons and kestrels, among other birds. Golden eagles may also be seen at the end of the Bembézar Trail, at the reservoir. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. It is also advisable to check trail conditions before setting out on the other routes.

The landscape of the Sierra de Hornachuelos

The Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park consists of several mountain ranges interspersed with ravines and elevated plateaus. In Córdoba province, the Sierra has the highest level of vegetation conservation. Holm oak (Quercus rotundifolia) is especially characteristic. The landscape features a variety of landforms rather than being defined by a single one. The trails provide further details: the Sendero El Águila passes through irrigated farmland and along streams as well as through Mediterranean woodlands.

Huerta del Rey Visitor Centre

The Huerta del Rey Visitor Centre is about 1.3 kilometres from Hornachuelos, in the direction of San Calixto. It uses audiovisual media to provide information about the natural park’s fauna, flora and landforms. Permanent exhibitions also focus on big-game hunting, beekeeping and cork harvesting. This lets you complement your exploration of the surrounding landscape with insights into several other topics. The distance and direction are intended as a guide; road conditions and signage may change.

The town’s architectural history

The Iglesia de Santa María de las Flores is located within Hornachuelos’s former walled enclosure, at the highest point of the town and close to the castle. Its history as a parish church dates back to Fernando III’s conquest of the town in 1240. The surviving building was constructed as a single-nave church in the early 16th century. Broad pointed arches separate its sections; older Roman and Muslim elements were reused in its construction. The church is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category; the corresponding legal declaration dates to 18 June 2002.

The Fortress of Hornachuelos consists of two parts: the walled enclosure and the castle. Its history dates back to the 10th-century Caliphate period. The fortress therefore dates from considerably earlier than the surviving church building. Different historical periods come together in the town’s story: the fortress’s early history, the parish’s history dating back to 1240, and the architecture of the early 16th century.
