Zahara combines a layered history with distinctive natural features. These include a medieval fortress, historic religious buildings, the Pinsapar and the Garganta Verde. A route to the Puente de los Palominos and the Corpus Christi festival also offer their own highlights. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether architecture, nature or a particular experience should be your main focus.

Heritage between the fortress and churches

The rocky outcrop of Zahara was chosen as the site for a medieval fortress. It was intended to control the area along the border between the Kingdom of Castile and the various states of the Andalusian period. Zahara de la Sierra was declared a historic-artistic site in 1983. This designation provides a clear framework for the town’s history, while individual buildings offer further specific points of reference.

The Torre del Reloj was the bell tower of the former Chapel of San Juan de Letrán. The Church of Santa María de Mesa was completed in 1755. If you are interested in historic Zahara, you can view these different landmarks side by side: the tower points to a former chapel, while the church adds a precisely dated chapter to the town’s architectural history. Together with the medieval fortress, they paint a picture that encompasses both the town’s strategic importance and its religious architecture.

Natural landscapes with the Pinsapar and Garganta Verde

Zahara’s municipal area was declared a natural park by the Andalusian regional government in 1984. One of Europe’s largest colonies of griffon vultures is found here, specifically in the Garganta Verde. The Ermita de la Garganta, a cave formed by geological processes, is also located there. These natural and landscape features offer different points of interest: the colony represents the area’s wildlife, while the cave illustrates the geological formation of the landscape.

The Pinsapar of Zahara is a forest of Mediterranean firs, known as Pinsapos (Abies pinsapo). The Garganta Verde is home to the cave and the griffon vulture colony; the Pinsapar is a forest of Mediterranean firs (Abies pinsapo). The municipal area’s status as a natural park, its wildlife and its plant communities offer nature lovers specific points of interest.

No permit is required for this route; different conditions may apply to connecting routes. As access conditions can change, check them before setting out. This keeps the permit information specific to the route to the Puente de los Palominos and avoids applying it to other paths.

Recreation area and Corpus Christi

The Área Recreativa de Arroyomolinos–La Playita recreation area includes a small artificial beach created by making use of the river course. The area can be visited at any time of year. Facilities and seasonal opening arrangements may change; if you are planning to use a particular facility, check in advance that it is open. The artificial beach offers a different nature and leisure experience from the route to the Puente de los Palominos: here, the focus is on the recreation area and its man-made beach.

The Corpus Christi festival is also an important part of Zahara de la Sierra’s cultural life. Its tradition stretches back more than six centuries. During the festival, the streets are decorated with eucalyptus trees, oleanders and flowers. Visitors can then try local specialties such as “quemones de cebolla,” “sopas hervías” and sweet liqueur cakes. The specific decorations and dishes may vary from year to year. If you choose the festival as the focus of your trip, the dates and offerings for that year are a practical basis for planning.
