Puerto Serrano combines routes through the countryside with a history spanning everything from Bronze Age burials to 18th-century buildings. This gives you several different focuses to consider when planning your trip: the Vía Verde de la Sierra, the Sendero Fuente de Ramos and several historic sites. If you’re looking for a hotel in Puerto Serrano, you can first consider whether outdoor activities, archaeological remains or architecture should be the deciding factor for your stay.

Routes through the countryside

The Vía Verde de la Sierra follows a disused railway line and is 36 kilometres long. Along the route are 30 tunnels, four viaducts and five former railway stations. It can be explored on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or on a donkey; motor vehicles are not allowed. Four access points with car parks provide access to the Vía Verde. The former railway line and stations give the route a clear connection to railway history.

The Sendero Fuente de Ramos is a much shorter route: it is four kilometres long and classed as an easy trail. Its starting point is at the end of Calle Blas Infante in the centre of Puerto Serrano. From there, the route passes through olive groves and offers panoramic views of the Guadalete Vega and the town. Compared with the 36-kilometre Vía Verde, the Sendero is shorter; it is also specifically rated as easy. This makes it possible to distinguish between the two routes by length and a stated difficulty rating.

Archaeology and historic buildings

Fuente de Ramos is a Bronze Age burial site; Roman and Hispano-Muslim burials were also later found there. A late antique Roman necropolis is located at the Ermita del Almendral. Traces of settlements from prehistoric and medieval times can also be seen there. The sites have different focuses: the burial history at Fuente de Ramos spans several periods, while the archaeological picture at the Ermita also includes traces of settlements alongside the necropolis. According to the municipal account, the Ermita del Almendral offers the best views of the town.

The Molino de Siré was originally a Carmelite monastery, founded in the first half of the 18th century. The Department of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía recognised it as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). Its former monastic function and BIC recognition offer two different historical perspectives on the building: its religious founding history and its designation as cultural heritage. The parish church of Santa María Magdalena has three naves, a double façade and a freestanding bell tower. These features describe the layout of the church interior, its exterior design and the detached tower—three specific ways to understand the church’s architecture.

The Romería de la “Malena”

The Romería de la “Malena” is a traditional festival in Puerto Serrano in honour of its patron saint, Santa María Magdalena; the official date is 22 July. If you’d like to plan your trip around the occasion, check that year’s programme, as the specific programme may vary.
