Chiclana De La Frontera brings together archaeological and neoclassical heritage, the history of wine and salt, nature trails and La Barrosa beach. Its sights and activities offer different ways to shape your stay – from the city’s history to trails through the forest and nature park.

Explore history and architecture

At Nueva Gadeira, you can see the remains of an ancient Phoenician-Punic city. The site is still inhabited, and numerous relics are visible. Free guided tours take you through the visitor centre, onto the +20 platform and to the Torre Mirador. Check the booking information for the tours before your trip.

The Museo de Chiclana is housed in the Casa de Briones. Its exhibitions, displays and collections explore local traditions and trace the area’s history from prehistory to the present day. Topics include the city’s origins and the Napoleonic period. This broad historical perspective at the museum can be paired with the specific archaeological focus of Nueva Gadeira.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is considered a significant neoclassical religious landmark in the province of Cádiz. The church contains paintings attributed to the school of Zurbarán. Its architecture and art offer a distinct highlight alongside the archaeological finds and historical collections.

Wine, salt and local traditions

The Centro de Interpretación del Vino y la Sal focuses on salt production, the making of Flor de Sal and wines from Chiclana. The exhibition also includes the Colección Marín, a section about famous puppets and a tribute to their creator. Chiclana’s wine tradition includes Finos, Olorosos, Moscateles, white wines, Creams, red wines, vermouth and Amontillados from the Marco de Jerez. Check the latest opening and booking information before visiting.

Trails through the nature park and forest

The 5.4-kilometre walking and cycling path between San Fernando and Chiclana runs through the Bay of Cádiz Nature Park. It starts at the point called La Vaera Bridge in San Fernando and ends at Chiclana’s fairground. The path forms part of the EuroVelo 8 cycling route. In the Chiclana section, it crosses the Caño Bartivás and the Río Iro over footbridges. Its length, route and endpoints make it a well-defined option for an excursion on foot or by bike.

Trails run through the pine forest in Parque forestal Pinar del Hierro y La Espartosa. The park has outdoor fitness equipment and sports facilities; parts of the forest park are also home to the chameleon. Its trails and facilities offer a different focus on nature and exercise from the route through the Bay of Cádiz Nature Park.

La Barrosa and water sports

Ramps and wooden walkways extending to the middle of the beach are available for people with disabilities. Beach services may change, so check the latest information on facilities before your trip.

La Barrosa is recommended for both experienced surfers and beginners. Kitesurfing is also recommended there and beside the Castillo de Sancti Petri. When planning these activities, take local conditions and the latest information from providers into account.
