If you want to put the coast, water sports, or history at the heart of your choice of destination, Poblado Sancti Petri offers several points of interest. These include the former fishing village, Playa de Sancti Petri, the marshes, and the Castillo on the small island opposite. The coastal landscape and the heritage of tuna fishing are closely intertwined here.

Fishing Heritage and Views of the Castillo

The Poblado has a fishing heritage linked to the almadraba and the catch of Atlantic bluefin tuna. Until 1973, it was home to fishermen’s houses and a cannery; almadraba fishing in the area was also discontinued that year. A walk through the old fishing village brings the history of bluefin tuna fishing and an old gastronomic culture to life. The history of the catch and gastronomic culture are among the defining themes revealed as you explore the village.

Another landmark is the Templo de Hércules, considered a small natural balcony and viewpoint in the Poblado, with views of the Castillo de Sancti Petri. The Castillo stands on the small island opposite the Poblado and was built in the 18th century. You can visit independently or on a guided tour. As visiting arrangements and reservations may change, check the current options before making plans.

Beach and Water Activities

Playa de Sancti Petri is suitable for windsurfing, particularly near the Sancti Petri fishing port. Its southern section is known as Punta de Piedras because of its rocky seabed. Behind the beach, a protected dune system meets a coastal pine forest. Views of the coast thus reveal both a specific stretch with its own name and the protected landscape beyond it.

Puerto Deportivo Sancti Petri is the departure point for crossing to Isla de Sancti Petri. You can take a boat or rent a kayak. The port also offers sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, panoramic cruises, and kayak rentals. A range of activities is also available on Caño de Sancti Petri: sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, diving, kitesurfing, and sport fishing. Operators and the terms of individual activities may change; check the options relevant to your plans in advance.

Routes with Different Focuses

The “Rutas playa La Barrosa y Sancti Petri” route ends at the former almadraba fishing village of Sancti Petri, at the mouth of the main channel that feeds the marshes. At low tide, you can follow the beach along part of the route; alternatively, the path runs through the pine forests of La Barrosa. The choice between beach and forest explicitly depends on the tides: the beach option is available at low tide, while the pine forests offer a different perspective on the landscape.

The “Chiclana, de Origen Fenicio” route has a cultural focus. It runs from the beaches of La Barrosa and Sancti Petri, via Cerro del Castillo, to the Nueva Gadeira | Espacio Arqueológico archaeological site, bringing the traces of the ancient Phoenicians on the coast to life. The route includes ten waypoints associated with Melkart, the patron god of seafarers and merchants. Thus, alongside the more recent history of fishing, it also highlights the ancient history of the coast.

Marshland and Coastal Pines

Paraje Natural Marismas de Sancti Petri is an extensive seawater channel in the Bay of Cádiz. It extends inland between the low-lying areas of San Fernando and Sancti Petri. The saltwater wetlands of the Marismas are home to numerous birds and marine species, as well as rich halophytic vegetation—plants adapted to salty habitats. Together with the dune system and coastal pine forest, they offer a natural theme distinct from the beach and the history of the old fishing village.
