In Vícar, you can make cultural history, festivals and outdoor activities different focal points of your trip. Roman waterworks and the historic town centre tell the story of the town; trails, landscapes and events offer further ideas for your plans.

Roman waterworks and historical traces

The Hidráulico Carcauz complex lies at the foot of the Sierra de Gádor and includes Roman aqueducts and irrigation channels. Its named structures include the Acueducto de los 20 ojos, the Acueducto por Rematar and the Acueducto de los Poyos. Together, they make the history of water engineering a tangible subject for a visit: the complex consists not just of a single aqueduct, but of several structures and channels.

Another historic structure is the Iglesia Fortaleza de Vícar. It was built between 1558 and 1570; its tower and battlements give it a fortified character. On 29 June 1985, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural monument. The Villa de Vícar, also called Vícar pueblo, is the historic town centre of the municipality. Its building façades feature murals with poems and stories, as well as colourful designs.

Festivals, traditions and theatre

During «Paseando entre Velas», emblematic corners of Vícar are illuminated by thousands of candles. The programme includes live music and street performances; the theme and programme may vary from one edition to the next. In 2026, the event reached its twelfth edition. It has attracted thousands of visitors for more than a decade and is established as an Andalusian astrotourism event.

Vícar maintains a year-round festival calendar that brings together tradition, public participation and local celebrations. You should check individual dates before travelling. The 2026 programme for Carnaval de Vícar included costume contests for children and adults, music, DJ sets and the Entierro de la Sardina parade. Semana Santa includes liturgical celebrations and processions by local brotherhoods; its dates change each year. On Easter Sunday, the traditional procession of San Benito takes place in the Villa de Vícar.

The Teatro Auditorio Ciudad de Vícar is also part of the cultural offering, with theatre performances for adults and children. As the programme changes over time, check the latest event dates if you are planning a specific visit.

Landscape, trails and outdoor activities

Peñón de Bernal is of considerable scenic value and offers panoramic views over the Poniente almeriense. Prior authorisation is required for traditional climbing on existing routes. Climbing, abseiling and similar sports or active tourism activities are prohibited from December to May. If you are planning activities at Peñón, take these restrictions into account and check the current conditions in advance.

The Vía Ferrata de Vícar runs around the Barranco de Carcauz, is graded K3–K4 and passes beneath the Acueducto de los Poyos. No current operating or booking information is available for this route, so check its current status before visiting. The Fuente del Tartel provides fresh drinking water from a spring supplied by the Complejo Hidráulico de Carcauz. Follow any on-site notices.

Vícar offers various ways to explore the landscape on foot. The Ruta de los Bancos promotes active tourism and passes through part of the Sierra de Gádor and by various sights in Vícar. The Rincones con Encanto initiative features wooden benches in particularly picturesque spots in the area. You can rest there, enjoy panoramic views and take in the cultural heritage. The area around the Barranco del Tartel is visited by hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers.

For the final hike of the 2025–2026 hiking programme, the Conjuros de Vícar route followed a circular trail of more than twelve kilometres, starting and finishing in the Villa de Vícar. The route passed significant viewpoints in the municipality and followed an old Roman road on the descent. Separately, the municipal programme includes signposted routes through a variety of landscapes. It is designed as a personal challenge, not a competition.

Promenade and other leisure options

The Bulevar Ciudad de Vícar is a promenade more than four kilometres long, with trees, green spaces, sculptures and monuments. It can be experienced as an open-air museum. The Parque de la Infancia has three themed areas spread across 7,000 square metres. The Vícar Doméstico area recreates traditional structures in the municipality, including aqueducts, typical houses and the town hall; a walk-through route is designed for young children.

For mountain bikers, the Vícar Bárbara is a dedicated event option. In the 2026 edition, the start and finish were at the Palacio de Deportes Ciudad de Vícar; the course was 54 kilometres long and included 1,500 metres of climbing. Another sporting option is La Envía Golf, on the slopes of the Sierra de Gádor, with views of Almería Bay. The course has 18 holes and a par of 70.
