If you’re looking for a hotel in Cuevas Del Almanzora, you can plan your trip around the themes that interest you most: art collections, architectural history, archaeology or coastal heritage. The sites and stories preserved here range from a fortified complex with museums to a hiking trail, beach and marine habitats. This makes it easier to decide what to focus on during your trip.

Castle, Palace and Museums

The Castillo del Marqués de los Vélez, also known as Castillo de Cuevas del Almanzora, was built as a fortified complex after the Christian conquest of the Kingdom of Granada. A palace was built within the Castillo between 1517 and 1520, combining a military fortress with a stately residence. The construction of the fortified complex and the later building of the palace were therefore two distinct historical phases.

The Castillo is home to the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Antonio Manuel Campoy, also known as the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo A.M.C. Its collection includes more than 600 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures. Artists represented include Pablo Ruiz Picasso, Jesús de Perceval, Pedro Bueno, Tapies and Joan Miró. The variety of media also makes the collection interesting for visitors who don’t want to focus on just one art form.

The Museo Arqueológico de Cuevas del Almanzora displays finds and materials from sites in the municipality. Its main focus is the Bronze Age, the Argaric culture, Baria, and the Phoenician and Roman periods. Guided tours with commentary are designed for a wide audience. Visitors can explore the archaeological collection through both its artefacts and its historical themes.

Archaeology and Architectural History

The Argaric settlement of Fuente Álamo is dated to approximately 2200–1600 BC. In 1996, it was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Archaeological Zone category. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación also brings together different historical layers: the church was built in the 16th century on the site of an earlier Arab mosque. It is protected as a historic-artistic monument and as a BIC.

The Cueva Museo offers a different perspective on local history. It presents the way of life of cave dwellers up to the mid-20th century as an ethnographic interpretation of the heritage and displays significant household items and tools. The Palacete de Don Torcuato Soler Bolea is also of interest to architecture enthusiasts: it is considered an outstanding example of 19th-century bourgeois residential architecture and has three floors. Notable features include the columns at the main entrance, latticework on the window openings on the first floor, and a continuous balcony on the second floor.

Cuevas del Almanzora’s Semana Santa was declared a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia in 2003. Its traditional performances include La Judea, a live reenactment. Visitors wishing to focus on religious traditions and how they are represented will find this a different way to explore the town’s history than through collections or architecture.

Hiking Trail and Coastal Heritage

The Ruta de los Reforestadores is an officially certified tourist hiking trail. It is listed as 12 kilometres long, taking 150 minutes, with a low difficulty level. The distance, estimated time and rating describe different aspects of the route and provide a practical basis for including it in your plans.

A coastal path along the Villaricos shoreline leads to the remains of the Fundiciones de la Costa de Villaricos. Visible there are ore-washing facilities, warehouses, furnaces, chimneys, small viaducts, hoppers, landing stages and a chapel. These remains bring the coast’s industrial past to life through a range of facilities and structures. At the Phoenician necropolis of Villaricos, visitors can see five of the 15 hypogea still preserved in Spain. These are tombs carved into the rock for wealthy families.

Playazo Villaricos is a sandy and rocky beach next to the castle. Its dark rocks point to the area’s mining past. The beach is listed as having easy access for people with disabilities, parking and a Blue Flag award. The municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora acquired Castillo de Villaricos, also known as Torre de Cristal, in the early 1990s. It was subsequently renovated for use as a tourist information centre and exhibition hall.

Water Sports and Underwater Landscapes

At the Cuevas del Almanzora reservoir, Lunar Cable Park offers water sports such as wakeboarding, kayaking and AquaGlide. It is also home to the only cable-ski facility in Almería province. The activities at the reservoir differ from those that head out from Villaricos to explore the underwater landscapes. These include seagrass meadows, extensive areas of orange coral, sea anemones and various types of algae.
