Huaral Province offers several clearly distinct themes to consider when planning a trip: archaeological sites, historic buildings, cultural collections, and natural and community sites. At Rúpac, the focus is on route guidance; at La Huaca, on historical chronology; and at the Santa Rosa Wetland, on its designation as a protected area.

Archaeological Sites in Huaral Province

The Rúpac archaeological site is in the Atavillos Bajo District of Huaral Province; the farming community of San Salvador de Pampas–La Florida is given as a reference point. From Pampas, a 7.3-kilometer trail leads to Rúpac, and the journey is said to take about three hours. Confirm the route details locally.

The Cerro San Cristóbal de Coto Archaeological Complex is also in Huaral Province, in the Suni natural region. On March 3, 2009, it was recognized as Cultural Heritage of the Nation through Resolución Directoral Nacional N° 317 / INC. Chiprac belongs to the Atavillos culture and is located in San Miguel de Acos in Huaral Province. The three sites can be distinguished by different features: Rúpac is associated with a specific walking route, Cerro San Cristóbal de Coto with a dated heritage designation, and Chiprac with its cultural affiliation.

History and Architecture

The history of the chapel and former La Huaca manor house goes back to land grants during the viceroyalty and the founding of Villa de Arnedo in 1562. The estate initially belonged to Hacienda Jesús del Valle. Juan Martínez Rengifo acquired it between 1562 and 1583 and donated it to the Jesuits in 1583 for the Colegio de Lima. After the order was expelled in 1767, the present-day chapel was built in 1784.

At Castillo de Chancay, the original construction and the later reconstruction were two separate stages: construction began in 1922 at the initiative of Consuelo Amat y León; in 1990, the castle was reconstructed according to the original plans. It covers 4,000 square meters, of which 2,200 square meters are built area. It also has ten reception rooms, 250 rooms, twelve terraces, ten halls, four towers and staircases, as well as tunnels leading to the sea.

Castillo de Chancay also houses a collection of ceramics, mummies and textiles from the Chancay culture. A viewpoint offers a view of the sea; from there, visitors are shown the site where the Chilean ship Covadonga sank. The collection and viewpoint thus connect different historical themes without telling the same story: the objects relate to the Chancay culture, while the viewpoint relates to the ship’s sinking.
